Outlook Express 6 Slow to Load
Thursday, April 24, 2003 at 1:01 pm Posted by Sarah
(6 messages posted)
I just did a complete overhaul on my computer (Windows 98 platform), to speed everything
up and clear off the junk. I was happy to be able to use OE again (after having to
convert to regular Outlook a few years ago when OE got extremely slow). It was cranking
along fine this morning, when all that was on my computer aafter the overhaul was
the internet. Then as I got everything reinstalled, it slowed up again.
Those IT experts out there: are there any programs with which OE is incompatible?
I'm running OE 6.
When I clicked the icon to open the program, it took 40 seconds for the introductory
screen to pop up. It took 1 minute 50 seconds for the program itself to open. And
it took 2 minutes 10 seconds for the Inbox to be visible. Then on top of that, when
I click Reply, it took 55 seconds for the screen to open that allows me to write.
Here's what I've got on my computer (which is only about 1/8 full):
Preinstalled Games/Accessories, CD writer, etc
Adobe Photoshop
Adobe PageMaker
Adobe Acrobat
Zone Alarm (Lavasoft)
Microsoft Front Page
Microsoft Office 2000 Professional Edition (package)
Microsoft Works
I *uninstalled* McAfee, because I was told it can be incompatible, and I don't like
their customer service
Norton System Works
Symantec Live Update (part of Norton)
Webshots
Windows Media Player
WinZip
Ad Aware (Zone Labs)
I had AIM and MSN Messenger installed, but that's when I noticed OE6 being stupid,
so I uninstalled them, too.
No luck. Still slow.
Any ideas?
Thank you.

Many programs you install think they need to start when you boot your system Sarah.
To start with, right click the 'My Computer' icon and then select 'Properties'. Select
the 'Performance' tab and check what 'System Resources' reads (with IE running).
I've also had reports of connection problems after installing the latest version
of WebShots. It thinks it needs Internet access and usually changes your home page
also.

Thank you. I ran SpeedDisk, Norton, and defragged the computer before I wrote my
initial message. Unfortunately, compacting the folders didn't make it open any faster.
And having just run a system recovery this morning to start everything from scratch,
there wasn't much "extra" on there. Thanks for the suggestions though.

Thank you. It reads 35% free. Is there something I should do to change that? Or to
change everything from starting at the same time as I start up the computer?

That's surely your problem Sarah. Rather than use MSCONFIG, download and run
StartMan.
Then you'll need to look over the startup listing to determine what it might be.
If you're not sure about an entry, you can right click it and select 'Identify' for
detailed information. If you need help with the listing, click 'File' on the toolbar
and then 'Save as Text..'. It will generate a startup list that you can copy and
paste here in a reply.
If you do, be sure to check the box....'Check this box to preserve your spacing'
in your reply.

You don't need these running...just uncheck them (not remove) within StartMan (overall,
everything else looks good). Then reboot and check your available resources again.

I would hazard a guess that when you installed System works that you have all of
the Norton utilities starting with Windows Start-Up to "protect" your system. This
is OK on a really powerful computer with plenty of resources, but with my 1.0GHz
PIII and 256Mb RAM it is better to only allow the Registry tracker to start up.
NU has several things starting all of which require system resources.
I would un-install all these things and be VERY selective when re-installing.
The one JmC gave you on OE Opening Very Slowly is well worth looking at.
I use DKLite to keep a check on Norton's Speed Disk as, if you set up Speed Disk
wrong, when you run DKLite you get a nasty surprise.
Most '98s when defragmented with DKLite ... run better.
Give it a try, it is alawys easy to un-install if you are not pleased with it.

If you have not up-dated to IE6.0 you really should do so. IE(;5 OE5.5 do not have
sufficient security these days and you have probably just re-installed IE5.5.

Further to the note on updating.
OLEXP: Outlook Express 5 Starts Very Slowly 235300
OLEXP: Outlook Express Performance Is Slow 271510
Take a look for a Computer Magazine with a fully up-to-date version of IE 6.0 SP1
Then you can remove IE5.5 completely with IERadicator:
Download the IE6.0 SP 1 Installer from the MAIN WINDOWS DOWNLOAD site MS DOWNLOADS
Or the full program as mentioned below.
Then use IEradicator to remove IE completely from your system and re-install after
running scandisk & and defrag.
Then fully update your system at the Windows Up-Date site for ALL system-critical
and security up-dates: Windows Update
How to download the FULL program of Internet Explorer 6·0 SP1 to disk.
(Choosing language and Operating system!)
1./ Download the IE6.0 SP 1 Installer from the MAIN WINDOWS DOWNLOAD site MS DOWNLOADS
2./ Choose the language which you require at the right side of the page.
3./ Download the installer (490+Kb) into a new folder called: C:\IE6.0SP1 and open
the folder to ... FULL ... window.
4./ Go to Start> Run>: cut & paste this line into the Run window, then press OK
ie6setup.exe /c:"ie6wzd.exe /d /s:""#E"""
Or sometimes: C:\IE6.0SP1\ie6setup.exe /c:"ie6wzd.exe /d /s:""#E"""
5./ In the download window which appears choose the operating system which you want
to put IE6.0 SP1 onto and press enter.
All of the cabinet files will now download into the same folder and you can
then either install or burn to CD-ROM
6./ Remove your old IE completely from your system using: IEradicator
7./ Run scandisk & and defrag.
8./ Run ie6setup.exe from the cabinet files to install the basic IE6.0 SP1
9./ Now fully update your system at the Windows Up-Date site for ALL system-critical
and security up-dates: Windows Update
10./ NOTE: Just copy and paste the above line. Otherwise you can get the syntax wrong.

Yes I know, but still find that it is better to take IE5.0/5.5 off the system and
clean install IE6.0.
Zone Alarm (Zone Labs)
AdAware (Lavasoft)
Zone Alarm ... may give a conflict with Norton too.
Generally Norton does not like competition.

This worked for me:
Messenger starts up with Outlook express, and if you have removed messenger Outlook
express will wait for messenger to start up for approx 30 seconds.
You can disable this feature in Outlook express, or in gpedit.msc (cmd-prompt).
to make it easy you can also download the program called XPantispy, where you also
get a lot of other options.
Good luck

my problem had to do with windows messenger. You may not have this on your machine.
I disabled/deleted windows messenger and oe hooks into messenger. since i deleted
messenger oe was coming up awfully slow. I re-enabled and it seemed to help. Hope
this helps u out.

this may be years later. but I've just encounter the problem and although the solutions
will work,
for those that disable messenger in windows, this would be a problem too.
you can click on RUN and type:
( RunDll32 advpack.dll,LaunchINFSection %windir%\INF\msmsgs.inf,BLC.Remove )
which will remove messenger, which is tied to outlook, and outlook will load up a
lot faster without having to reinstall IE and its components.

Could I offer my thanks too?
I discovered this site when my OE ground almost to stop and I googled for a solution.
I had earlier downloaded and installed Opera (just to see what it was like)when
the trouble started .. coincidence??
With some trepidation I followed the instructions for IEradictor and a reinstallation
and to my joy it worked.
Opera also loads quicker.
Thanks again
Dave
