Hi, Yesterday while surfing the net, my system froze. As usual, I pressed ctr, alt, del - it did'nt work. So I hard booted the system. Then the login message appeared and later on, there were no desktop icons nor the taskbar. I pressed ctr, alt,del again - saw explorer.exe in taskmanager. When, I pressed end program, it gave the message 'system appears to be busy, please wait for 20 secs' multiple times. Finally, I had to hardboot it again. This happened multiple times. Please help.

I don't understand if you can now boot or not. If you can get into Windows as normal,
run System File Checker. It may correct any corrupt system files that occurred. If
that doesn't help, or you can't boot post back.

Select START/RUN, type SFC (System File Checker) in the 'Open' box and press
enter. Follow the prompts and have your Win98 CD handy. If you haven't used this
utility before, click the 'Settings' button and be sure both options to check for
Changed and Deleted files are selected.

Repairing Internet Explorer might also help afterwards: Select START/RUN, type
MSINFO32 in the 'Open' box and press enter. From the 'TOOLS' menu select 'Internet
Explorer Repair Tool'. Then from the next menu select the repair option.

Hi,

Thanks for the message. Anyway, i solved it. I suspected some registry error as
i had installed a software prior to this incident.

All that anybody, with similar problem due to software installation, has to do is,
1. Switch on the computer.
2. Press F8
3. Choose safe mode with command prompt only.
4. On prompt type, "scanreg/restore".
5. Restart the system.

This apparently restores the normal registry of the day prior to creation of error
due to the errant software. Voila, everything is back to normal. But remember,
you can do this only within four days after the error has occurred as per the windows
help.

Actually, the default number of backups is 5, but this can be changed to a maximum
of 99. To do so, you need to change the file scanreg.ini. This file is in c:\windows

Open the file, and change the value of MaxBackupCopies. The value can be anywhere
from 0-99.

For more information about this file, see the MS article, 183603, at http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;183603

Wow, JmC, you are certainly knowledgable. You and everyone else who posts good advice here and the creaters of this Website are lifesavers. I've done what you suggested, as I am having the same problems. Two files had been corrupted, so we'll see what happens now. I'll post again in a day or two. Thanks, Juli
