Hi Ryan, Your link below is OK for Windows 2000 or XP but this does not fix Win98 issues. You can't run a command unless you change from the 'explorer' shell to 'winfile' or 'progman' shells in the system.ini. All, I found many others experiencing this problem right after installing DirectX. In more than a few cases it was DirectX 8.1 under Win98. I tried uninstalling this to no avail. Registry changes don't look to be the culprit as I went back two vervions from DOS. I even copied a new Explorer.exe shell from my Win98 CAB with no luck. I will let you know how I go. Good post from Carol in this thread too. Cheers James

Hi James,

Even I am experiencing the same problem and
this discussion forum has helped me a lot......

Instead of panicking and looking for the right
engineer to pop up I just serached for a discussion forum and since then I have received
very handy support

For the time being I am taking it one at a time

I have tried scanreg/ restore but in vain.......

I have even tried to replace the shodcvw.dll
to no avail....

The only thing left to do seems to be " re install " the
windows 98 and run a virus scan using the file
tsc.zip

I am reday to re install but I am feeling apprehensive coz 'am not sure if that would
be able to restore my
already installed softwares.

If it can restore then it's Iam on my mark and ready to go........

Thanks for all your support............

Good Luck.........

Alex.

James, This same problem after I installed DirectX 8 on Win98. How did you uninstall DirectX 8? Thanks.

Anyone find the the reason for this crash? I noticed the same thing. I need to install DirectX8.0 on win98 and on some machines it does this. Do you have a list of DLL files that DirectX puts on the machine? Please, if you know the cause of this crash or any ideas, please post (the machine having the problem some differences that might contribute - NAV and GoBack are installed)
