Windows 98 dont recognize Pentium 4 processor?

Hi I'm using Windows 98 SE, installed an Intel Pentium 4 2.4Ghz CPU and the system sees it as a x586 - Pentium with MMX Support! Is there any way to get the system to recognise the CPU correctly? Also I remember vaguely that Windows 98 also doesn't recognize any hard disk that has capacity over 40GB, is that true?

Windows doesn't care about the cpu, the motherboard does and that where you have to make/change that setting. Your motherboard manual should tell you how to get into the BIOS and make the change. MrC

I agree, this is a motherboard/BIOS isue, not a win98 issue. That is where the CPU
is identified. Usually that is automatic, but if necssary, input the information
manually via the pick-list provided in the BIOS setup. However, if the particular
CPU is not listed, it might be because the motherboard is too old to handle it.
(For example I just built a PC with a motherboard (circa late 2002) and it was not
rated to handle a 3GHz CPU. It is perfectly happy with a 2.53 GHz CPU, whihc is
on its list of approved CPUs.) Check with the motherboard maker's support website
for what CPUs are supported by your motherboard.

As for the hard drive, 98 can handle more than 40Gig, but older motherboards may
not be able to do that. Of course, any motherboard made for a Pentium 4 should be
able to handle up to about 137Gig, and maybe more. Once again, check the motherboard
manual. However, 98 might have a problem if you go beyond 137Gig, since even XP
needs SP-1 for that.

Many thanks, I will check out the BIOS.

I have checked, there is no pick list to select my cpu type. It's a AMIBIOS version 3.31a.

Not trying to argue with you experts but this is indeed a windows 98 issue. The BIOS
recognize my CPU as a P4 2.4Ghz processor and so do other system detection application,
all expect Windows 98 itself. The system properties nows says my CPU is a x86 after
I try some fix. This cause some program not to run since it demand to run on at least
a Pentium processor.

This is what I found on Intel's web site:
"Note: Intel Corporation announced the Pentium 4 processor brand name for its next
generation processor in 2000. Since the new brand name was announced on this date,
the current versions of Windows* 95 and 98 are unable to recognize the Pentium 4
processor. The Pentium 4 processor is mistaken for a Pentium II processor by Windows
95 and, 98."

If you're concerned with the processor listing in System Properties, change it with
this......oemin101.zip

Sheesh that program just add some personal writings and the system still shows GenuineIntel x86 Family 15 Model 2 Stepping 7.
