I recently got connected to broadband cable and my windows 98 Solitiare stopped working. I hope someone knows how to fix it: When I try to start it I get: SOL caused a general protection fault in module KRNL386.EXE at 0002:00003077. Hi Duane, first thing I would try would be reinstalling Solitaire. OK, I'm using Windows XP here so I don't have 98 to double check but I think this is the procedure (from memory):

Go to Control Panel - Add/Remove Programs - Windows Setup, then untick the box for "Games" then Apply and OK your way out.

Then do the same again and re-tick the box for games and click Apply, you may be asked to insert your Windows 98 CD at this point so have it ready...

Hi Carl, I really appreciate your help. I tried what you suggested. It didn't ask me for a CD but flashed it was getting file from Windows 98 CD when I put the games back in. Unfortunately, I get the same results when trying to start Solitaire. The other three games still pop up on screen.

Thanks JmC and Carl! Your tips led me to believe my solitaire problem was due to a program at startup due to something done when an installer hooked me up to broadband cable. I finally solved the problem by going to startup, run and running the MSconfig command. I found three new programs under startup added by Adelphia.net installer. I unchecked all three one by one and tested my cable connection before rebooting. The last one referred to as "Motive SmartBridge" which activated a file "MotiveSB.exe" was the culprit. My cable connection still works OK. Unless I notice some problem I plan to leave them out of my start up menu so I can play the old Solitaire.

If you're happy, we're happy Duane. That's usually the problem with any of the MS
card games. Some little gift you didn't need to begin with. The gifts that ruin them
permanently, are usually MS Office related updates. Thanks for posting back!

I just had the same problem after installing a new Western Digital HD. I went into Start/Run/msconfig/Startup and eliminated the Data Lifeguard, that is loaded with the WD floppy, on the startup menu, restarted and the Solitaire game loaded OK. Just thought someone else out there might have the same setup problem.

Here is a Microsoft Knowledge Base article that may help: http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=304402

Don't know if you have Office XP, but maybe you have a related problem...

Even better:

Details several possible causes, most notably spyware that you can easily pick up
from scummy web sites...

I just discovered last night that Grisoft's AVG Anti-Virus 6.0 doesn't like Win98's Solitaire either. If the AVG Control Center (which actively monitors your system) is running when you try to start Solitaire you will get the Kernal GPF error referenced in the original post. If you shut off the Control Center Solitaire starts working again. My solution, rather than disabling my anti-virus, was to download a better, free solitaire. :) 123 Free Solitaire (http://www.123freesolitaire.com) is much better anyway.
