Question about 'Do I still need CONFIG.SYS and AUTOEXEC.BAT?'

My Windows 98 would not boot until I disabled autoexec.bat, when I look into the details of that file the last subfile is a long sting of nonsense, I tried to disable it, but it got checked again when I booted with autoexec.bat engaged. How can I delete that nonsense subfile from autoexec.bat? I do have the original system disc, I fear if I try to load that it will erase all existing material.

Hi Bernie; You can fix your autoexec.bat file. Select Windows Explorer - select the root directory (C: drive) - locate autoexec.bat in right pane - left click it - click on File (upper left) -click on Edit - put a :: at the front of the material you think is bad - click on File - Click on Save - Click on exit Try your system. If it works go back to autoexec.bat and delete every thing on the lines you blocked with the the :: If you are still having problem list a copy of your autoexec.bat file to this thread. Bob G

Just use Windows Explorer to go into drive C:\, and right there is your autoexec.bat file. Right click on it and then click Edit. Change it as you please. By the way Windows 98 does not REQUIRE config.sys or autoexec.bat to start, however they may be used to load various drivers, etc. Kendall

Now in my situation, I didn't find the Autoexec.bat file in the C: drive. So what I do is go from Start to Run and type in Sysedit which takes me to the Autoexec.bat display and then edit it in the fashion already mentioned(insert a ; before the line).

Here's I edit my Autoexec.bat file...

Open NOTEPAD.
Click on FILE.
Click on OPEN.
Look in: C
Click on FILES OF TYPE:
Click on ALL FILES (*.*).
Scroll over to AUTOEXEC.BAT.
Click on AUTOEXEC.BAT.
Click on OPEN.
Edit from there.
This method also works for accessing the CONFIG.SYS.

Side note: I added four little lines to my Autoexec.bat and they work like a charm.

DelTree /Y C:\WINDOWS\TEMPOR~1\CONTENT.IE5
DelTree /Y C:\WINDOWS\COOKIES
DelTree /Y C:\WINDOWS\HISTORY\HISTORY.IE5
deltree /y C:\windows\temp\*.*

Keeps things nice and tidy...

What is a subfile? win98 as a fresh install typically has a 0 byte autoexec.bat file and no config.sys file at all. I would suggest that one might need at least a 0 byte file named autoexec.bat or your old autoexec.bat file will get resurected from the dead every time? Try renaming it to .old extension and then make a new blank one with notepad, save it to C:\ root folder and reboot. Got any drivers or programs that you know must be loaded from autoexec.bat file? Copy and paste those from .old file to new one. Then reboot.
