Question about 'Prevent file corruption problems'

I have a question about Prevent file corruption problems:

I have problems installing new programs on my computer. During installation, I get an error message about "corrupted files". In the beginning, I thought it only happens with programs loaded down from the internet, but now I bought one of the programs (Netscape 7.1) on CD on I still get the same error message! I ran Scandisk, System File Checker, a Virus Scan, Defragmenter and everything appears to be fine. Does anybody have an idea? Thanks a lot, Mike

To try to determine if it's something running on the system, what happens when installing
in Safe Mode?

In addition to JmC's suggestion, with great caution you might like to try disabling your antivirus software before installing software. (Of course, RUN A VIRUS SCAN ON THE NEW SOFTWARE PACKAGE FIRST). Some software will not install or will throw errors if virus scanning is active. This should not happen, but unfortunately iit does from time to time. Above all take all precautions before switching off the antivirus software and start it again, preferably by rebooting, immediately afterwards.

Hi JmC Thanks for the answer. I tried to start in safe mode and I get an error message: "Himem.sys test: bad XMS-Memory at adress 02C0F8DA. XMS driver not installed. Press any key to continue." When I do that, I get the message: "Himem.sys is missing. Please press ctrl+alt+del to restart" So I restart and then Windows starts in normal mode and everything is fine. The himem.sys file exits in my Windows and my Windows/Command folders. I am sure all this has to do something with my installation problems, can you tell me how to repair this? Regards, Mike
