Question about 'Things that slow down system bootup'

I have just completed a new computer from scratch, using w98se. My question is where to look to see why during boot it hangs on the windows logo screen for way too long before continuing? Can anyone shed some light. Not a crisis just annoying. Thankyou for any help. John

You might want to disable the windows logo to see what's going on. After the long wait, when you're at the desktop try the msconfig.exe and minimize the amount of programs booting. Hope this helps.

One suggestion:

You might try Bootlog Analyzer.

And, related to using that, in case you have questions about that your bootlog.txt file, here's a related
MS article.

Also, here's yet another related MS article that may help.

If you just built a new machine, why would you not use the most recent edition of Windows?

Aside from what's been said thus far, this problem could also be due to a corrupted swap file or bad drivers. To check on the former, start in Safe mode, disable the virtual memory and restart. If this was the cause the system will boot normally . Put the swap file back the way it was before. If drivers are the issue , go from Start to Run and type in ASD. You could also run the System File Checker(SFC as a Run Command).

I really recomend you to take a look at msconfig (start / run then type msconfig) .In the start option see if there is anything strange or unusual and uncheck it. ALWAYS let explorer, systray and others windows devices. Also remenber that uncheking usefull stuff (like antivirus software or any other software) my cause others softwares to stop working. My advice is if you don't know for sure, don't mess it up. You can try 2 others things if you like: First if you use and Antivirus program, uninstall it and see if he is the major cause of the problem. Last tip: Spyware. I use Spybot Search and Destroy to clean it up.
