Are you an Adelphia Cable (Internet) customer? Did you download the program from their website that is supposed to help troubleshoot connectivity problems? I did, and the matcli began appearing on my taskbar. I uninstalled the program and the matcli disappeared. (Program wasn't helpful, anyway).

As soon as I installed Verizon DSL with MSN on my machine, "Matcli" started appearing. Verizon techies tell me that Verizon does not put spybot on its installation CD. The techies said that if Verizon did this, most firewalls would notify owners and block it and this would cause an uproar. What to do to eliminate Matcli?

I would suggest you download Spybot (free at www.download.com) or similar software to get rid of spyware. Be careful and read the Read Me file of Spybot so you don't cause damage to your computer.

I had the same thing. Here's what I did: I ran a search on "my computer" for "matcli" and found where it was coming from in my case. It was an executable in Program Files/Hewlet Packard. So I went into add remove programs to see what HP products I had installed and noticed that one of them was something called "direct support." I uninstalled that and problem solved. You could use the same method to figure out where it's coming from on your PC. Good luck!

I deleted Matcli which I had never had until I installed Verizon DSL. Shortly after deleting Matcli from my system, I downloaded the latest Verizon DSL CD, and Matcli reappeared. I went into file search of the Verizon DSL installation disk and found that Matcli is part of the Verizon support file in two locations. If I delete it, I have problems with Verizon DSL. So go figure. MJ

matcli stands for 'Motive Chorus Command Line Interface". It gathers information about your system's identity like your name, e-mail address, city, state, etc. and gets written to a log file. It is a Motive Powered Service from HP. To remove matcli, uninstall 'hp instant support'. The standard way to remove this program is by going to Start | Settings | Control Panel | Add or Remove Programs | Select HP Instant Support | Change or Remove Programs | OK. Hope this helps.

Based on a previous reply, I did a search and found that matcli was associated with a new CD supplied by blueyonder.co.uk. This was an 'Instant Support Tool' "to diagnose and fix PC problems".

This is part of a tool provided by Motive (www.motive.com) aimed at Broadband providers, to ease support. Appears with BT Broadband Help, along with a "Motive Browser". Aims to reduce calls to support centres. Removing broadband help will remove matcli.

Matcli, so it seams is having an efffect on every highspeed user, It comes from your service provider, or manufacture, such as all that have Adelphia, Verizon, etc. It seems that you all may have contacted or had problems with your highspeed... A program they used for diagnostics. I has to do with SUPPORT, Verizon Support, HP Support, Adelphia Support etc... If you uninstall any support exe. programs in uninstall, you should see it disapear. Dont start driving people crazy with the spyware software...You might have realized it started last time you spoke to your ISP or manufacture...You may ask them how to unistall... It will probably leave your computer when you resolve your issues that you have with your ISP. If you can read this message, It hasnt crashed your computer. Ad-ware and spyware detection will not find it. Good Luck

As stated already, it is also installed when you install an hp printer such as the all-in-one. Thanks to whoever pointed this out, and yes it shows in the add/remove programs as instant support for the hp products. Not surprising as it showed up after the printer install, but thanks for confirming. Is 56k high speed? LOL HP Instant Support? LOL

I have to agree with TB. I just installed an HP all-in-one printer, and ever since, have had Matcli showing up on the task bar, and causing nothing but trouble for my computer. I waited 15 minuters for the stupid thing to boot up last night only to have it freeze up. It hasn't caused the computer to crash yet, however if I can't get it out soon, I might crash the stupid thing with a hammer. I am going to try a couple of the tips lised previously. Wish me luck.

I just uninstalled it through add/remove programs, seems to do the trick. THe other thing I've found useful is to turn off the printer and close the monitor in the taskbar, as well as the digital camera 'launcher' runnng there as well. Otherwise the machine does not shut down nicely always. Been fairly stable. Not bad for a via chipset and an amd processor, lol.

What software or hardware have you recently installed? That will be your first clue to where this program came from. HP includes the matcli program in all their newer software provided with all their printers ( it's also included with dsl, broadband and several other programs that have "instant support" type software.) uninstall any (or the newer support\help programs that are part of recently installed software) support exe. programs in uninstall, under Control Panel - Add and Remove Programs.

"matcli" installed with my HP printer too, it sure is a popular annoyance. Thanks to the tips, i uninstalled "HP Direct Support" in the control panel "Add/Remove Programs", it uninstalled without a hitch, no more matcli. Thanks AnaK, hope you've solved the crash probs, as far as i know you've got to get up at least in "safe" mode then uninstall "HP Direct Support". BTW, matcli caused no probs on this box, just took 10 seconds longer to boot.

For me it was put on C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM\conagent.exe Thanks for the heads-up on this and how to delete (must uninstall the entire e-care program) otherwise it keeps loading every start-up.

I had the matcli problem as well in Win 98. I had HP Instant support loaded and I found that I had two options: Start, Run, msconfig, startup, DESELECT HP INSTANT SUPPORT(matcli.exe was associated with this item). Or uninstall HP INSTANT SUPPORT as I learned from this forum: Start, settings, control panel, add/remove programs, hp instant support (remove) THANKS!!!

matcli is an ntl program related to the broadband medic install, it does cause lockups on connections. best advice is to not install it in the first place. if however u already have. then disable it from start/run/msconfig/startup untick the check box

I have a cablemodem, but never Verizon. It is dated 3/17/04 and lurking in the aforementioned HP directory causing a bluescreen on ME. Spybot, AdAware, and Norton have not caught it. Does puting a file in an HP folder give it some validity to the scanners? **Am grateful to find this discussion, everyone**

Thanks for the help, all. I was having a problem with matcli on the taskbar causing "Me" to hang on restart but not on start. I did a search and found matcli was part of the Dell Resource Assistant. I followed the directions posted above Start/Run/msconfig/startup and unchecked Dell Resource Assistant. Works fine now.

I removed all of the matcli programs, now when I reboot, it is searching for matcli...why? (Yes matcli originally came down when we installed Verizon DSL.) Also, since I unistalled it, I can't logon to Yahoo Messanger. Can I reinstall matcli? It really didn't bother me, I just thought orignally is may be some type of spyware or virus.

I found the answer Barbara Hilal Matcli.exe? Maybe you can help me? What is Matcli, and what should I do about it? It comes on as a little icon when I turn on my computer and immediately disappears from view. I have looked on Google and the consensus is that it is gathering information and should be removed. Can you help and tell me what if anything I should do. Could it be connected with an HP printer which I bought recently? Many thanks. Martha A. Dear Martha: There is a split opinion on the subject of that file. When present, there is always also another file by the name of "secret.exe" which makes people nervous as it could be exploited by hackers. Let me quote from pedantic Microsoft: "matcli.exe is a motive Assistant Command line interface that gathers information about your system's identity like your name, e-mail address, city, state, etc. and gets written to a log file while silent.exe executes matcli.exe quietly in the background." This file was introduced when HP bought Compaq. It is required to run some of the special data provided in the Compaq Knowledge Center. These files were introduced when people bought a new HP printer. You did not say if you also have a Compaq computer. In that case, if you were to remove these files, you might no longer have access to items such as "Fix my Presario computer" wizards. I will leave that decision up to you. The standard way to remove this program is by going to Start | Settings | Control Panel | Add or Remove Programs | Select HP Instant Support | Change or Remove Programs | OK. If later you feel naked without that support function, you can reinstall it from the printer driver diskette.

MATCLI. W98SE Program slowdown fixed.

Posted by Bob Welker (2 messages posted)

I've never had MATCLI in the taskbar (at least, not permanently) although it would pop up for some 10 odd seconds during Windows start-up. This started loading after installing Verizon DSL, and (ever conscious for anomalies) had determined it was part of their package, and what it ostensibly was supposed to do (as described in previous posts). I've alway had uneven connect speeds, sometimes a very hard time connecting at all, and (when running into this again last night) started to uninstall the Verizon programs ... leaving the iVasion poET adapter driver for last ... just to see what would happen. Several observations: 1). MATCLI stopped loading during startup. Slightly faster boot time as a result of this. 2). Still able to make DSL connections (with about the same results as before ... no-go to mildly crappy). 3). Norton System Doctor still showing a lengthy period of 100% CPU utilization after the computer seemingly has finished booting (approximately 1 minute in duration, and while about 20 MB of physical memory is being allocated for something). 4). An unexpected side benefit of 'fixing' two programs that had begun to behave badly. I use both Irfanview and IDM (Internet Download Manager). Several months ago (and several days after installing a newer version) Irfanview started to run like molasses on Pluto - it would eventually load files, but CPU utilization went to 100%, and getting a file manager screen could take up to two minutes. Approximately the same thing happened after upgrading IDM. It may be coincidence (in which case its a rather remarkable one) but uninstalling the two Verizon support programs has cleared this up, and both programs run fine again. For the record, I'm still running Win98SE (v4.10.2222) with IE v6 browser using all available patches, keep up-to-date with Norton Antivirus, and regularly run both Spybot and Ad-Aware in an attempt to keep malevolent byte beasties at bay. I was wondering if anyone else had noticed otherwise unexplained program slowdowns 'fixed' by uninstalling the Verizon support programs?

.... top post snipped .....

I too noticed matcli appearing in a DOS dialgue box on start-up (a Win98 machine)

I traced it using 'Find' to a diagnostic check-up programme that was 'helpfully'
installed when I upgraded to DSL/Broadband (AOL)

Simply uninstall the support program or edit the startup options (start - run - msconfig
- select startup tab and deselect matcli entry) to stop the programme executing

I had the same prob. after nu broadband install. Got this off a website, written by a guy in the U.K., Hugh Watkins. "My guess is you've recently installed a Hewlett Packard product or signed up with a new Internet Service Provider. Motive Chorus is a part of a program that gathers and logs information about your PC with the intention of providing more effective customer support. It all sounds a bit suspicious, and it may have been installed without your knowledge or permission but apparently it's not regarded as intrusive so it doesn't show up on spyware scans. However, you can easily get rid of it by going to Add/Remove Programs in Control Panel and delete items such as 'Direct Support' and 'HP Instant Support'."
