Question about 'Identifying the programs that Windows runs at boot'

I have a question about Identifying
the programs that Windows runs at boot:
I have 3 seperate notepad applications start when I boot. I have tried the advice
given in this thread for win 98 relating to msconfig and the registry. I seem to
remember something about .vxd files may cause this when I last tried to research
this problem. But I don't know what .vxd files are for or how to verify that they
are causing the problem.
Thanks In Advance,
