Question about 'Dealing with Bad Memory (RAM)'

I have a question about Dealing
with Bad Memory (RAM):
PLEASE HELP!
I have a computer running Windows 98se. This morning I turned it on, it was not perfoming
like usual (the colors were distorted, many of my programs would not function), frustrated
I decided that I would re-install Windows 98se over the previous installment. This
did nothing but bring up the screen which lets you take a tour of Windows 98se. Irritated
I began to do things in the bios (F2). After restarting my computer all I could get
is this message "This program has performed an illegal operation and will be shut
down." "If problems persists, contact the program vendor."
PLEASE someone tell me what to do now so that I can get my computer up and running
again. As of right now all I can do is turn it on and NOT move past the "illegal
operation" message.
THANKS A BILLION... Mrs. TJ

First go into your BIOS...there should be a "restore system to factory specks" button
there, if so, restore to factory specks...Then boot from a Windows floppy and when
you get the A:\ prompt type in "scanreg/fix" without the quotes and when it is finished,
reboot...If that don't do it, then repeat the boot with floppy and when you get the
A:\ prompt, type in "scanreg/restore" and pick a date before your crash and try that.
If that don't work, you may have to reformat your hard drive and reinstall windows
from scratch...From what you described as the problem, you could have gotten a virus.
