Question about 'How do I stop a program from running whenever I start Windows?'

I have a question about How do I stop a program from running whenever I start Windows?:

I'm a very experienced windows user (since before 3.11), currently running 98SE, but this has me stumped:

Whenever I restart, Windows runs the System command -- to see that, Start->Run->"System".

I've checked the startup folder, the .ini files, the Run and Runservice registry keys, wasted the time looking at autoexec.bat and config.sys (getting desperate here), but I cannot find out what's doing that.[Reply or follow-up to this message]

If the cause isn't within these folders, try the registry key at the link below.......

StartUp-Folder

Start-Menu-Folder

Windows Explorer Starts When You Start Your Computer

I had already checked these "usual suspects", and the registry key value was not set, nor do I use IE5. What else might be causing this?

Thanks a lot JMC for your last link!!! I got a C:\ Explorer window everytime at startup and tried all the obvious 'StartUp', 'msconfig', 'win.ini', 'config.sys' and 'Run' key solutions. All were as clean as I wanted them. It also wasn't a virus, so..... I just closed it every single time :-( At least it seems that Microsoft has a solution for *some* bugs after all, huh? :-) Great site by the way! Greetings to all helpful people! Sjoerd. PS Nice hat!
