I have a compaq Presario, that is probably 5 years old. Its harddrive has 1.99 GB
capacity. Most of the memory is used up, I only have 492 MB of free space. I dont
know what is taking up my whole hard drive, how do I get rid of all the junk? HOw
do I know what is not needed? what can I delete to get more memory? I dont want to
buy another harddrive.

Memory has nothing to do with your hard drive space. A lot of temporary files are
created, when performing various tasks, programs installed, etc. It's normal for
free space to decrease as you use your systme.

You can clear out various useless temp files and uninstall programs you don't use.
You should not allow your drive to get below approx. 200 MB free space at anytime.
Windows needs breathing space.

As long as you maintain at least 100 MB free hard drive space, your computer shouldn't have any problems. However, if you use the internet excessively, just clear out your internet cache (go tools, internet options, click delete files). Make sure the recycle bin is empty, and go into the recycle bin properties (by right-clicking on the recycle bin) and lower the percentage of hard drive space it uses. Then go into control panel, ad/remove programs and see if you have any programs you don't want. I can't think of much else you can do other than going into the temp folder (can't remember where it is on Win98; just run a search for it) and deleting temp files if you wanna mess with that. Make sure you run defrag (in the start menu under accessories, system tools) after you're done.
