Aptiva comes on but nothing on monitor!

Machine operates as always but there is no picture on monitor. Could it be the battery?
Computer has been used primarily by kids for games and learning and has always been
shut down after use which is why I think it might be the battery. Hope I'm right!
will look for opinion.

Shutting down your computer when it is going to be idle for many hours or days is
fine, so that will not bother the battery. Here is what I suggest you do:... 1.
Check the monitor cable to make certain it is connected properly.....2. Check your
monitor settings to see if anything comes up.....3. When you Boot/Start, are there
any beeps beyond one beep? If so, check your Motherboard booklet to see what the
BIOS beeps relate to since that will tell you where the problem lies.... 4. If there
are beeps, then your Video Card, CPU or Motherboard could be bad.... 5. If no beeps,
no DLED's on the back of the case with red and green colors, and nothing on the monitor,
then either your CPU or Motherboard are defective. Replacing the CPU first makes
more since than having to gut the machine to replace the Motherboard and all of its
components, providing either of the two are the root of the problem.

Six beeps mean that the display is sick. I suspect your monitor has just up and
died on you. You can get a secon dopinion on the monitor by plugging it into a friend's
system.

Thanks but I have checked the monitor and it is okay. Maybe the connection inside
the housing........or something?

It is difficult to count the beeps....I thought there were six but after turning
the computer on again I discover there are only five......sorry about that! Do you
have any ideas?

What makes you say the monitor is OK? "green light on" doesn't mean it's OK. Try
the monitor on another computer. If it produces a display, that's a good sign.
The monitor could still be bad, even if it seems to work OK on the other computer.
It might have lost the ability to display at the refresh rate your computer is set
for.
If the monitor won't even display the IBM logo at power on, it's definitely sick.
