While trying to reformat a Presario 5020 running Windows 98 first edition with a standard Win 98 boot disk, I typed at the a:\> format c: /s/u/v. The message came back- Insuffient memory to load system files. Format terminated. I tried two different boot disks with the same results. Any advice, please help.

Maybe a computer of the type you described requires a different process, but when formatting my hard drive I press F8 as the computer boots(no floppy in drive)Choose command prompt only, and at the prompt type format c: After it's done, ensure bios is set to boot from cd-rom as first boot, stick in win whatever and that's it.

Compaq's got some proprietary stuff that's hidden on your HD. Try fdisk at the A:\>. After that try format, but only format c: /s.

That error happens when you try to run Format with the /s option while CD support is also loaded.

If you're reinstalling W98, you don't need the system files to be on the hard drive first. Windows Setup will prepare the hard drive for booting by copying the correct system files as required. You need to ensure, however, that Fdisk has properly marked the partition as "active". However, if you insist,... Run Format without the /s option, and run the SYS command afterwards, like this:

    format   c:   /u   /v
    sys   c:

Here's a procedure that might clear up a few of your questions:
