I re-format my pc because it kept on freezing and logging me out prematurely. I re-install
Win 98 but on re-start it gives me an error message hymem.sys can't be found and
it ask me to re-start my pc but it will do the same thing. Any suggestions/help please
anyone.

Start in Command Prompt mode. Hold the CTRL key while the computer is booting. This
will produce a white-on-black boot menu. Select Command Prompt only from the menu.
Type these commands, hitting Enter after each one:
deltree   /y   c:\*.sav
ren   c:\config.sys   *.sav
ren   c:\autoexec.bat   *.sav
Restart your computer.
If you still have that error, you didn't install W98 correctly. In that case, here's
a procedure that might help.

Thanks for the reply. I tried this and the last 2 items didn't work. So I re-installed
the win98 on CDrom and its the same thing. Did I format my pc wrong? The bootdisk
I downloaded from the site you suggested will not work on my a: drive. Kept on telling
me that it is an invalid drive. Anymore suggestion? Will greatly appreciated.

The two lines in that instruction won't work if the files mentioned aren't there.
That's normal, because all we're trying to do is to save those files and also get
rid of them as far as booting is concerned.
When you boot with that W98SE "custom" boot disk, the CD drive is r:. The
CD drive will only be accessible if it's a standard IDE drive. If you have a weird
drive that's connected to the parallel port or by means of USB, forget it. You need
to use the manufacturer's DOS boot disk.
Here's a procedure for doing a completely "clean" install:

After setup, my pc will give me this error on restart.
"While Initializing Device VCACHE. Windows protection Error.
You need to restart your computer."
And when I restart a screen message say...Hymem.sys has detected unreliable. XMS
memory at address 01000166. XMS Driver not installed. To continue starting your pc
press Enter.
And when I do that it gives me an error message Hymem.sys is missing.
