I was able to get my homepage issue resolved with that, but then noticed the control panel issue. I also lost access to "properties" on "My Computer." Someone had given me the advice to restore a prior version of my registry...I also did that to no avail. I am fresh out of ideas. I have recently ran into others that have the same problem. They have been told that it could be a new variant of the CoolWebSearch Hijacker. Any other ideas would be greatly appreciated. You've got nothing to lose, it will only reset the default registry settings.
