Did you reboot after adding the check mark back to display modem status??

=In W98/ME, go to My Computer using Windows Explorer, select Control Panel, then
Dial-up Networking. From the menu at the top, select Connections, then Settings.
There should be an option there to show the icon (or not if unchecked). While you're
at the DUN page, make sure the similar setting for each connection is (un)checked
(which may or not help). When you get back to the desktop, reboot.
