How to get my Windows 98 computer to automatically shutdown by it's self.

I have a Windows 98 computer and I would like it to shutdown automatically, instead
of seeing a message saying (It is now safe to turn off your computer).I just bought
a new hard drive for my computer and this computer I am on now would not let me install
Windows 98 on here.So I hooked the hard drive up on another computer and it let me
install Windows 98.When that was done I hooked the hard drive back on this computer
and it worked,it loaded Windows 98 up.It works great, but I am now trying to figure
out how to get it to shutdown automatically. My old hard drive that I use to have
on this computer would shut down the computer automatically. Now it won't with this
new hard drive.I'm not sure but I think when i hooked this new hard drive back on
this computer after installing Windows 98 on another computer, that, that might be
the problem. So if anybody knows how to get my new hard drive to shutdown automatically
that would be great.Oh by the way I do have the APM (Advanced Power Management) enable
in the bios setup, just to let all of you know.So thanks to anyone who gives me help!

I'm not sure whether disabling it will get rid of that. I just don't recall, but
it's adviseable not to use power saving features at all on Desktop PC's. That's more
for use on laptops.

Try visiting this link http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=234216 and look at using
number 8 (Poweroff feature)
SUMMARY
This article describes commands that you can use to create a batch file that automatically
restarts Windows 98 or Windows Millennium Edition (Me).
MORE INFORMATION
You can use either of the following commands in a batch file to restart Windows 98/Me
automatically:
• runonce.exe -q
• rundll32.exe shell32.dll,SHExitWindowsEx n
where n is one, or a combination of, the following numbers:
• 0 - LOGOFF
• 1 - SHUTDOWN
• 2 - REBOOT
• 4 - FORCE
• 8 - POWEROFF
The above options can be combined into one value to achieve different results. For
example, to restart Windows forcefully, without querying any running programs, use
the following command line:
rundll32.exe shell32.dll,SHExitWindowsEx 6
NOTE: Using the FORCE option can cause programs to lose data.
Below is an explanation of each available option used with the above command line:
• LOGOFF - Shuts down all running processes, then logs the user off.
• POWEROFF - Shuts down the system and turns off the power. The system must support
the power-off feature.
• REBOOT - Shuts down the system and then restarts the system.
• SHUTDOWN - Shuts down the system to a point at which it is safe to turn off the
power. All file buffers have been flushed to disk, and all running processes have
stopped.
• FORCE - Forces processes to terminate. When this flag is set, Windows does not
query running applications to inform them that Windows is shutting down. This can
cause the applications to lose data, therefore, you should only use this flag in
an emergency.
The "rundll32.exe shell32.dll,SHExitWindowsEx (n)" command mentioned above can be
called from the RunOnce registry key.
The runonce.exe -q command mentioned above restarts the computer after a 15 second
delay. There are no other options when using this command line, and it cannot be
called from the RunOnce registry key.
For additional information about the RunOnce registry key, please see the following
article in the Microsoft Knowledge Base:
137367 Definition of the RunOnce Keys in the Registry

I believe that Paul Hokanson's tips for shortcuts won't solve the problem, since
they are shortcuts to execute such a power off or reboot command. I use them myseilf.
I am having the same problem: after I resolved the problem of the "Standby" option
disappearing from the Shutdown menu in my Windows 98 SE, now when I choose to power
off I get the "It is now safe..." message, instead of the PC shuting down like it
used to.
I would think about the BIOS, but I didn't touch it, neither to create or solve
the first problem, or to create this one of it not shutting down on its own.
I'm still investigating myself. If anyone comes across a solution, please tell
me.
Thanks,
ML
