missing SHLDDRV.VXD
Wednesday, February 11, 2004 at 6:03 pm Posted by Roland

After running a virus scan, I have been receiving an error message upon boot up saying
that the file SHLDDRV.VXD is missing. I suspect that this file was overwritten by
a virus and was deleted in the scan. I did a Google search and found only one other
post of an instance of this happening to anyone else, and the few fixes they were
given did not fix my problem. Is there any way I can get rid of this error on boot?

It would be a good idea to backup the registry first. Select Start/Run, type SCANREGW
in the 'Open' box and press enter. When prompted, select 'YES" to back it up.
- Select Start/Run, type REGEDIT in the 'Open' box and press enter.
- When Registry Editor opens, click 'Edit' on the toolbar and then 'Find'. Next
in the 'Find what:' window type SHLDDRV.VXD and press enter. If the entry
is found, it should show in the right pane.
- Right-click it and select 'Delete' from the menu. You can then press the 'F3'
key to continue the search for other instances. Close the editor and reboot.

Its now May -Have you recovered your SHLDDRV.VXD?
I did a virus scan also and when I deleted the scanner it started this problem when
booted! I was wondering if you've gotten any relief yet?

I did it Idid It!!!!actually I got a tech to instruct me he was wonderful and I'm
ecstatic , it took 2 times repeating the process to delete all the offending files
but now she boots like a champ! The following are the instructions I followed.........Hope
it works for you too!
In order to fix this problem, you have to change the Windows Registry. Changing the
Windows Registry, may cause harmful damage to your computer, therefore, before I
tell you the fix, you must back up your registry. To do that, follow these steps:
- Click "Start" >> "Run" >> Type in "regedit"
- The Windows Registry should now pop up
- Click "File" >> "Export" and save the file to a known location, where you can access
it, if something goes wrong
Now for the fix, please follow the instructions listed below:
- Click "Start" >> "Run" >> Type in "regedit"
- Click "Edit" >> "Find" >> Type in "SHLDDRV.VXD"
- Right-click it, and select "Delete"
- If you press F3, you can find all other occurrences of this file
-- If it cannot find the file go to "hkey_local_machine" >> "system" >> "current
control set" >> "services" >> "vxd"
-- Right-click and delete the line if it contains "Shlddrv.vxd"

I get rid of the boot up message by deleting the SHLDDRV.VXD entries in the registry.
The problem appeared after a virus scan with Panda Antivirus Titanium 2004. Thanks
Yvette.

Hi,
my friend's PC developed this problem with the error message at Boot time - missing
shlddrv.vxd.
Panda anti-virus software had been installed on the machine but was uninstalled some
time before the missing file problem arose.
What has happened though is that MS Word has become unavailable. Every time the application
is invoked, it fails to open and the PC runs out of resources, causing a system lock
up requiring a reboot using the reset button, as using Ctrl Alt Del fails.
I have uninstalled, rebooted and re-installed MS Word from Works Suite 2000 CD, several
times, and the same thing happens when Word is called.
My friend never mentioned Media Player, but they probably never use it, so wouldn't
miss it.
I can't find shlddrv.vxd on the Dell System Recovery CD for the PC.
Or on the Microsoft web site.
Though some results from Google await investigation.
As a last resort, the Registry or the System.ini can be modified to remove reference
to the file at Boot time, but I doubt this will fix the problem with MS Word or Windows
Media Player, assuming that the missing .vxd file is the culprit.
Before I carve up my friends PC, I will do some more research into the uses of this
shlddrv.vxd as the name suggests it may have effects on Windows operating system
itself. If so, and it is integral to Windows 98se, rather than some application,
it should be re-installed from the CD. Which, I believe can be done without losing
your data, just the raft of Windows Updates you had installed.
While I have had some training in this, I'm not an expert, so when I've found out
some more I'll come back here to post what I've found.
Regards
David

Hello,
I wrote earlier tonight that I also have seen this problem, on my friends PC.
From reading posts on other forums, many others are having this problem too.
Here is an URL for a forum where the advice about how to stop the annoyance is the
same as here, by deleting the line from The Registry with the additional route by
manipulating the line in the System.ini file.
http://www.computing.net/windows95/wwwboard/forum/155179.html
Remember to make the backups before you do any deleting and you should be OK.
regards
David

THERE ARE MANY REPLIES ON THIS THREAD BUT NONE OF THEM SAY HOW TO REINSTALL THE FILE.
The need is to get rid of the StartUp screen saying "CANNOT FIND...."
Will much appreciate some help on this vexing situation. It has arisen as a consequence
of installing PANDA and removing Norton AV.

Did you not read what is at Bleeping Computer?
What is so freaking difficult to understand?
If you have deleted Panda, clean out your Registry.
If you want to keep Panda, reinstall it.

Hi again: Despite your vituperative responses you are at this time my only source
of help.
1. I assume your reference to Bleeping forum is the 11FEB04 8:40 pm JmC reply.
What is so freaking difficult for you to understand that reply had nothing to say
about restoration? As my Annoyances message clearly stated, I followed directions
in that message BUT the file restoration is entirely missing.
2. Do you bother to read my messages or just ignore them? I said I downloaded Panda,
and have not installed. So why do to refer to IF this-or-that?
3. If you are in fact as knowledgable as you pretend, why not get to the subject:
Path to RESTORE and/or a copy of the needed file for cut/paste including where to
paste?
Sincerely, RO

No, you don't need to restore that file, you need to remove all references to it,
inspite of what you think! Search the registry for that VXD file, by name, and remove
all instances of it.
End of story! So, drop it and just do it.

Thank you, Carol J.
I thought I had made it very clear I have already done the removal.
The problem remains: At startUp, "... Cannot find file.."
I'll be much obliged if you can tell me where to find it (bearing in mind I do not
have CD disk or use of SafeMode).

And, several of us have made it VERY CLEAR, what you need to do. Apparently, you
didn't get all traces removed, or you wouldn't be getting that message. Follow the
advice you've been given, or live with the problem.
Good grief........are you for real??
You don't need a CD disk... you need to SEARCH THE REGISTRY FOR THAT VXD FILE, AND

Good grief, indeed Carol J. I am for real and I wonder if you are. Why is it so difficult
for you to understand the removal was accomplished precisely as directed. From memory
I believe the right pane reference for the specific file was as10, but don't hold
me to it. There were a series of numbers 08/10/12/14, etc.
And where is the logic to Cannot find file... which has been purposely and completely
removed ?
Your gratuitous assertion I have not followed advice given is completely unwarranted.
The patronizing tone of your response as well as its content belies any effort to
help those who admittedly do not have your superior knowledge.
Have a great day! Don't waste it on me. Sincerely, RO
