Hi all. I have a problem when Windows starts. The following error messages appears whenever Windows 98 loads: "Cannot find a device file that may be needed to run Windows or Windows application. The Windows registry or SYSTEM.INI file refers to this device file, but the device no longer exits. 'vredir.vxd, dfs.vxd'" After Windows has login, the following error message appear: "Unable to load the dynamic link library - msnp32.dll" Will greatly appreciate the help here..=)

Use regedit Go to start, run, and type regedit - this will get you into the registry editor - be very careful - editing the wrong thing will screw up your PC - use the edit menu to find vnetsup.vxd and delete the entry. Do the same for the other two entries. Restart your PC - this will get rid of the error messages except : unable to load msnp32.dll - I'm still having a problem with this. Andy

Howdy, Boy, is it ever so rare when I know a solution but to get rid of the pop up msnp window is real easy. At least for me. I just went to Control Panel/ Network/Configuration and the first listing was a Windows network thing that msnp is related to. I just removed the sucker. I tried to install norton 2005 many times this weekend and have had to re-format 3 times. I gave up and downloaded a free virus blocker. But after each re-format, I have had a ton of these issues. I am working on the VxD and dfs.vxd now, one key at a time. Steve.

First of al,l these errors are, all fairly innocuous, there is nothing to worry about, but still if you are getting annoyed looking at these errors then .. we do have a couple of ways to solve them. All these files vnetsup, dfs, vredir are all network/dialup related driver files.(vxd's are all drivers.) Vnet->Virtual network,dfs->drive mapping ,msnp->clinet network.. You could face this problem under many situations such as ,change of dialup to broadband, deleting a program rather than uninstalling it.. Solution: 1.get into Regedit ->users->system->current controlset->services. here you would have all the driver folders for Vnet, dfs and vredir.. just delete the value "vnetsup.vxd" ..so on.. for all the three.. 2.reboot your machine except for the mnsp.dll error ... rest should be fine.. 3.msnp.dll is a client network file, either you can download it from any of the available websites and paste it in C:/windows/system folder but just in case you aren't able to download it go to control panel ->network and remove the microsoft client network.. this will solve the problem. Reboot your machine ... you wouldn't be getting annoyed hereafter..
