Right-click Menu Mishap

Problem: Some very useful options (eg eraser, winzip, encryption etc) have suddenly vanished from my mouse right-click menu. The standard menu options are still present but not the extras from installed programs. Also, these extra options DO appear when right-clicking folders but NOT indivigual files (eg .txt, .doc, etc). Weird. I'm running Windows 98SE. Have searched but can't seem to find where these options are sourced... Any ideas? Nix

Check each programs option/preferences to enable the context menu option. I'm sure
WinZip has this option, otherwise reinstalling the programs may be necessary. The
settings are in the registry, and this may have been caused by a corrupt key.

Thanks for your reply, JmC.
Agree that the problem is somewhere in the registry to do with a corrupt key but
which one - any ideas? Would love to have a gander at it! In the meantime, have reinstalled
some of the programs which has rectified the menu options when right-clicking on
files (remember though that the options were already ok for folders...).
Great site - will visit more often!

These should be the correct keys:

HKEY_USERS\.DEFAULT\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\MenuExt

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Classes\*\shellex\ContextMenuHandlers

Thanks again JmC.

Found another right-hand click registry entry at:

HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\*\shellex\ContextMenuHandlers

The values for the programs under these keys must be generated in a way not familiar
to me 'cos I couldn't make heads or tails out of it. Is there a secret?

Programs that support the ContextMenuHandlers function, setup the context menu items
during installation. Some have an option to enable/disable this feature. When they
all appear missing as in your case, it's usually related to poor programing. When
you uninstall an application, it attempts to remove it's own context menu entry.
If the program was poorly written, it can wipe out the complete list (registry key).

Very interesting - the only program that I had to uninstall and reinstall was Spybot
which did roughly coincide with the right-click menu problem.....
I've definitely learned something from all this! I wonder if any others have experienced
this with Spybo

?
