Pop-Ups by the Billions!
Friday, March 12, 2004 at 7:11 am

I have picked up something and now my computer sends numerous (and I mean numerous!)pop-up ads. Of course, the primary ad offers to sell a pop-up prevention download. Clever. The various names and companies offering downloads and such are: iDownload;QuickSheild; UnitedSoftware; CoolBar.com; Adserver. I've run my updated CWShreader, SpyGuard and the useful Spybot. I have a cable connection. Any thoughts?

Tip: Run a free scan for common Windows errors ad

I also had the same problem. It happened around noon on Wednesday March 10, 2004 on two different machines using 2 different connections. It also placed 5 icons on my desktop including a Lycos search engine icon. I also ran Spybot. It cut down on the amount of popups but I still get them occassionally. It also places adds inside the browser at the top of the page. Any ideas how to relieve the problem?

Download and run a scan of your system using HiJackThis.exe. Scan your system then hit the save button, save it in notepad. Then copy and post the log back Here. Be patient and I will look at it. MrC

Hello. As you suggested, I scanned with HiJack This. It won't save the log successfully. When I try to save, for some reason Kodak Imaging opens to "read" the file...and it can't. I have Notepad open and ready to go, but can't get any further. Of a very related matter: There is an item called PurityScan that has recently arrived and has been identified by Spybot. I delete it with Spybot, but it is found again when I run Spybot again...apparently not really deleted. My recent problems began when PurityScan arrived. Spybot lists it as: PurityScan: Software HKEY_USERS\.DEFAULT\Software\PurityScan It's referred to as a Registry Key. PopUPs now even occured when I have the Internet shut down!! Thank you for helping. Bob

I tried as you suggested. Still couldn't save HJT to Notepad. Went into REGEDIT and followed instructions as best as they were laid out. I've found a "new" item in my startup that is suspect...(it's included in the log from HJT). Specifically: HKCU\..\run:[Rtrr]C:\windows\Application Data\hawh.exe It's the Hawh that appeared in my Startup programs (when I push Alt/Ctrl/Del). Should I attempt to eliminate the hawh.exe via HJT and/or Regedit?

Sorry to bother you again. I did run the Uninstall offered by PurityScan. (That made me nervous since they were the source of my troubles). Anyway, after running Spybot again, PurityScan no longer is identified. Simultaneously, the hawh.exe application no longer shows up in my startup...and the Popups have stopped. So maybe I'm fixed unless this thing "morphs". Thank you for your help and expertise. Bob

Good deal!, I did check out and run the uninstaller myself and thought it was safe. Most of them do work, glad to see you're back to normal. To prevent problems like this, use the Immunize feature in Spybot and you should also install SpywareBlaster. Good Luck - MrC

OK. I'll bother you a touch further. Everything still runs fine. However, the hawh.exe application is showing up again in my startup. This was listed in the HJT log as well. (HKCU\..\Run:[Rtrr]C:\Windows\Application Data\hawh.exe) Do you know anything of this application? It was certainly uninvited. Should I go into REGEDIT (oh dread) and get rid of it? Maybe just click it in HJT and delete it there? Thank you very much and thank you for monitoring and helping with the Annoyances forum. Bob

OK, have HJT fix this one, then reboot and delete this file C:\Windows\Application
Data\hawh.exe

Have HJT fix this one:
HKCU\..\Run:[Rtrr]C:\Windows\Application Data\hawh.exe

If you have trouble deleting that file, try in safe mode or use the TheKillBox.

Thank you. I "fixed" it under HJT and then ran a "find" and was able to delete it from there. The hawh application is still sitting in my recycle bin. Everything seems to be in good order. Thank you again. Bob
