Question about 'When I choose "Shut Down" from the Start Menu, my computer hangs at the "Please Wait" screen'

I have a question about When
I choose "Shut Down" from the Start Menu, my computer hangs at the "Please Wait"
screen:
The same thing happened to me all of a sudden: the computer hangs at "Windows is
shutting down ..."
The strangest thing about that: I re-formated the hard disk carrying Windows (my
D drive) and
restored all Windows files from a backup tape that was made BEFORE the shutdown problem
occured,
and it STILL persists! A hardware problem?
However, I found out that I can turn off the power as soon as that screen "Windows
is shutting down ..."
appears, without running SCANDISK or any other ill effects at the next bootup.

i have had the same problem for some time now. i
have taken the windows fix with no luck. i am
replacing the hard drive, and will not save anything
from the old drive. i hope it doesn't come along
with the reinstall.

Try reading through the troubleshooting suggestions on this Microsoft site:http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=http://support.microsoft.com:80/support/kb/articles/Q202/6/33.ASP&NoWebContent=1
If trying those suggestions doesn't work, you might be a candidate for the Windows
98 Shutdown Supplement. I used to have that hanging problem too, but after installing
the shutdown supplement the problem disappeared. The problem apparently occurs because
Windows is trying to write to the hard drive at the same time that it is trying to
turn off. It's some kind of a timing issue and the supplement takes care of that,
if I remember it correctly. Carl S.

forget unloading a sound wav. (that doesnt work) and having to hold the enter key.
the fix is to go to windows update and load the mapped shutdown patch. that will
cure this problem once and for all!
