Can't get beyond Registry Error found Screen

Help. I know very little about computers so thank you for your patience and advice. My son's computer, used mainly for games, will not boot up past a screen that says that the registry found errors in files and has made good backup files. It tells me to hit enter to reboot my computer. When I do this the whole cycle starts again. I can't get to my desktop screen or anything. Any advice for the novice??? thanks!!

Put your win98 startup floppy (boot floppy) in the floppy drive and boot the computer to a DOS prompt [A:\>]:

A:\>scanreg /restore (press enter on the keyboard) and select a date before the error happened. Note: there is a space between scanreg and /

That can indicate either registry corruption or memory (RAM) problems. If you restored a registry backup, as suggested by Pappy, and whether or not that got rid of the error message, I suggest you run the Registry Checker to repair/rebuild the system's registry. It's not difficult and hopefully will take care of it. It has for me, more than once. To do so, you need to boot to the Command Prompt. Reboot and hold the CTRL key down, until you get the boot menu. Choose Command prompt only. At the C:\> type scanreg/fix Hit Enter. Windows will attempt to repair/rebuild the registry. This takes a few minutes. When done Hit Enter again. At the next C:\ prompt, type: scanreg/opt to clear empty space in the registry. Note: you'll see no activity during this. It's just a few seconds. Press Enter again, then press CTRL_ALT_DEL or type: win and hit Enter to get back into Windows. Microsoft KB Article: Registry Checker Continues to Detect Registry Damage
