Explorer invalid page fault

Hi, I recently returned home from a four month absence and found my computer would not boot. I ran a scandisk from DOS, which found many new bad sectors. I thought my harddrive and everything on it was lost, but when I rebooted I could log-in to Windows. However, once I logged in, before any icons could appear I received a fatal error message the details of which are: EXPLORER caused an invalid page fault in module at 0000:8000016e Registers: EAX=00430ac8 CS=019f EIP=8000016e EFLGS=00010246 EBX=0080f800 SS=01a7 ESP=0080f534 EBP=0080f54c ECX=71510fbc DS=01a7 ESI=00000000 FS=2fff EDX=00430000 ES=01a7 EDI=0080f7fc GS=2fe6 Bytes at CS:EIP: Stack dump 7150e02d 00430ac8 500032a0 0080f800 00000001 0080f804 0080f7dc 7ff2cb20 7150da58 00430ac8 500032a0 0080f800 500062e8 500032a0 bff773cf I'm hoping that the problem is now software and not hardware and that there is something I can do to get Windows booted up again long enough to recover my more important files. I have tried reinstalling Windows, but run into the same error message. Any advice or suggestions are welcome, thank-you Joanna

Hi Joanna, That error message is hard to pinpoint. Hopefully someone will. In the meantime, suggest seeing Carol's reply here 10945000365-click here about the compacting & repairing the Registry. Then try going into Safe Mode and run the System tools. Start-run- type msinfo32- click tools. Good luck.
