Question about 'What to Throw Away'

I have a question about What
to Throw Away:
I acquired a Dell Laptop with W95 OS and 1.2GB drive. I upgraded to W98SE from a
CD. Then Uninstalled, removed, & used unstaller program on other junk.
Have not installed but a few programs, but a very large amount of disk is being consumed.
Have lots of a good ideas from your forum.
Question. There is a folder Windows/Options/ which contains a CAB folder and some
files. The files are MSCSD.exe,.inf,.ini,MSCSD1.lib,MSCSD2.lib, startup.ini
The startup says its in case windows 95 has a problem.
The sub folder CAB has 35MB in it, and a lot of W95 cab files.
When I do something to W98, I have to use the CD. I wonder if all the stuff in this
option file are for W95 and are no longer needed.

The C:\Windows\Options\CAB folder contains the Windows install files, so you don't
need them. You can copy the 98 CD to the drive for easier access, but that will take
up even more space. It's a good idea, though.

Hi Carol, I'm a little confused. Is 95 different than 98 as far as the cab files
go. I know nothing about updating to 98 from 95. But I use my cab files to repair
or to reinstall without the need for the CD. Isn't it the same thing if you copy
the CD to the HDD. You will still have the same cab files on the computer along with
other stuff.

Hi phantom,
Actually, I messed up. You don't copy the entire Windows CD to the drive, just the
CAB directory. Those are all that's needed to reinstall. So, 95's CABS contain 95's
install, and 98 Win98's installation files.
It's best to put the CABS in the root directory, rather than Windows. For example
C:\Win98SE. If you do put them in the root, you should make a modification in the
registry. That way Windows knows where to look, when you point to the CD, if you
need to extract missing files.

Thanks Carol, Does an upgrade CD have all of the 98 files on it or does it also use
some of the 95 files in the cabs? And does the installation modify the cabs and for
some reason still leave the files as 95cabs? Never done an upgrade. Much easier to
do a nice clean full install and with a lot less problems when finished.

Upgrade CDs' can be used to install on a formatted drive. You'd just need a previous
version CD, to show your system qualifies for an upgrade, when prompted for verification.
Proof there's something to upgrade from. I hope I explained that right.
