Want to re-install SigmaTel AC97 audio driver

By mistake, I uninstalled my SigmaTel AC97 audio driver v3011WDM. I'm using Windows 98SE. From a Google search, I've downloaded various SigmaTel AC97 drivers, zipped and unzipped, but even after the SigmaTel blue screen shows up and says I've installed it, and when I opened up their .exe file and even that says it's been installed, I still get no audio from Windows Media Player or RealPlayer. I tried driverguide.com download, but they're worse than useless. Its SigmaTel AC97 download only has 11 files in it and not one of them is an .exe file. So I'm stumped. The only thing I can think of to restore my audio is to re-install Windows 98, then Windows 98SE on top of it. That contains the original SigmaTel audio driver that I need, I suppose. Can anyone advise me on how to uninstall Win98SE and then install Win98 and Win98SE again? Many thanks for your help. Dave A.

Dave
Try it one more time..
Use the file you downloaded..
some drivers don't have a exe file with them just a INF file..(short for install
information file)
Use the Add & Remove Hardware icon in the control panel.
When it ask ,tell it you have the disk,,,point it to the spot on the HD when you
unziped the file..
It should pickup the inf file you downloaded and reinstall them..
Good Luck

Try right clicking on mycomputer/properties/device manager/ find you sound in the list and + it and go to update drivers ,dont' do the recomended auto search ,direct it to one of the folders where all the files are that you downloaded and hit install .some drivers don't have exes to install you have to do it this way .

To DEX and pp:

Still doesn't work. I tried both suggestions. I clicked on the .inf files but they
all show Notepad text. Many other files bring up the dialog box about opening up
with various programs. Actually, the screen where SigmaTel says it installed itself
is green; not blue. Still, no luck. Maybe I will have to reinstall Win98SE. Any
reason why that might not work? If it's okay to do so, how does one reinstall Win98SE?
 Thanks for the replies.

Dex: I right-clicked and then clicked "install" on every .inf file I could find,
both in driverguide.com's download and the original SigmaTel downloads (from two
sources, making a total of three downloads). It still doesn't install. It also
doesn't show up in Add/Remove Programs. I clicked on every .exe file I could find
in the SigmaTel downloads, but no success. This is the first time in 10 years that
I've been downloading programs that doesn't install when I click the .exe file, and
that doesn't show up either in Add/Remove Programs or in Start-up Programs. Thanks
again for your reply. I really would like now to try uninstalling WIN98SE and reinstalling
it, but I may be inviting trouble if I attempt it. Any ideas?

If updating video drivers in Device manager doesent work when you direct it to the folder with all the .INF files you downloaded,it because ethey are the wrong ones ,or are not newer than the ones already installed

Dave
The AC97 onboad Audio is setup by the BIOS make sure you have enable it in the BIOS
setup..

If you have and you still can't get it to work with all the drivers you have downloaded
..
Go out and get a (PnP) pci audio card and pop it in and disable the onboard one and
be done with it...
You can get a pci sound card for about 20 bucks and the AC97 sound device are not
that good anyway..
Good Luck

PP: Thanks for the information. Another strange thing happened. I have two full
SigmaTel downloads and one driverguide.com download for the audio drivers. About
an hour ago I used the SigmaTel uninstall feature and told it to uninstall. At the
end of the green screen, it said SigmaTel was totally removed from my computer.
Not! After the required Windows restart, the two SigmaTel downloads and the driverguide.com
download are still there. Thanks for your reply.

Dex: Great idea. But since I've had the computer tower exchanged by the local computer
guy, and although I'm very satisfied with the new set up, he did manage to defeat
the ability I had of getting into the BIOS before. Now I don't know how to get into
it. He told me to hold down the shift key as WIN98SE booted up and that would do
it; but it didn't. That's how one gets into Safe Mode.

Thanks for the tip. I'm going to try like hell right now getting into BIOS. I do
know that all sorts of things are in there and should be activated. You're right.
Sound somehow may be defeated and the downloads I installed may already have been
effective, but the BIOS is off. I'll let you and the forum know if that's the case.
But if you have any idea of how I can get into the BIOS while I'm fiddling around
here, I'd appreciate it too.

Dex: I was able to get into the BIOS by holding down the F2 key as the computer
booted up. But I was surprised to see there is nothing in there that affects the
sound or audio drivers. I just clicked on F9--Restore Defaults. Still no sound.
Every troubleshooting item I try out for Windows says that there is no sound card
installed, meaning, I guess, that the SigmaTel AC97 Audio Drivers certainly were
uninstalled. I liked the links you gave me; since I've started a Web page for myself,
I was able to use of the info on them. Thanks for all your help and time on the
problem I have. I appreciate your input, but I'm calling it quits now. Dave A.

Dex and others:

I solved the problem of no audio on my computer by perservering and troubleshooting.
My conclusion is that all of the SigmaTel AC97 downloads that I undertook in the
past week were either defective or not the right ones for my motherboard, because
none of them installed even after the operation said it had been installed.

I decided to go into the registry and delete every reference to SigmaTel, which I
did successfully. I also had deleted every SigmaTel download I had accumulated.

Then I made a different search on Google, using "SigmaTel AC97 download" as the key
words. It produced a great Web site named "Intel Desktop Board D845GLVA--Driver
Updates." Clicking on it brought up a treasure of various drivers including the
one that I needed under the heading of "Windows 98SE Drivers." It's called "Integrated
Audio: Sigmatel 9750 5.10.3686 1.85MB 25 NOV 2002." I clicked on the diskette to
the left of the file name and the SigmaTel download wizard took over. When it finished,
I looked for an .exe file and found the only one, which was named setup.exe. When
I clicked on it, the normal SigmaTel screen popped up ready for installation, titled
"SigmaTel AC97 Audio Drivers, v3011 5.10.00.3686." After installation was complete,
sound was restored to my system. Finally. Thanks to Dex and PP for replying. Hope
this summary helps someone else with the problem of losing audio from their sound
card.
