Question about 'How do I get the Windows Update feature to work?'

I have a question about How
do I get the Windows Update feature to work?:
This problem has arisen like a phoenix for me, I am not sure what this Internet Connection
Wizard is, but I found the directory and renamed it rather than deleting it.
The Completed entry in HCU\ S..\ M..\ Internet Connection Wizard was already 1.
I have a DSL connection and I suspect the wizard has something to do with dial up
- my memory is getting sooo bad.
As suggested at http://v4.windowsupdate.microsoft.com/troubleshoot/
I have tried deleting HLM\S..\M...\W...\CurrentVersion\Internet Settings\User Agent\Post
Platform
All to no avail.
If anyone has any other suggestions please advise
note bene : I REINSTALLED W98SE ON 27/2/2005 AND DOWNLOADED ALL CRITICAL, DRIVER
AND MOST OF THE OPTIONAL UPDATES ON THE 28/2/2005 - LIKE THAT'S LESS THAN 2 WEEKS
AGO. So any suggestions that I reinstall W98SE will need to be supported by some
pretty convincing evidence that that will fix the problem permanently.

You seem to have missed out what the problem actually is.
You say you reintalled Windows & downloaded updates......from
WindowsUpdate presumably?

Sorry KeithT, I thought my post would be linked to a discussion here sime time ago
(hence my phoenix reference) regarding a problem with Windows Update not accepting
a connection with the message
=================================
Thank you for your interest in Windows Update
Windows Update is the online extension of Windows that helps you get the most out
of your computer.
You must be running a Microsoft Windows operating system in order to use Windows
Update.
===================================
Here's the link to the original discussion to which I refer http://www.annoyances.org/exec/show/article04-010
or do a search in this forum on Windows Update and you'll find it easy enough.
My issue is that the monitor wakes up every day at 11:00am telling me that MS have
a critical update awaiting my attention, would I like to go fetch it now, whether
I do it then or later I get the above message.
I have tried out everything suggested here, by MS Support and the WU Troubleshooting
page at MS. Nothing seems to do the trick, and yes on the 27/28 Feb I downloaded
all the patches, new versions of IE, WMP, DirectX etc via Windows Update.

No, here is what do I run
as required (main apps)
wp/ss/pr etc -- Open Office 1.1.4
email -- Moz Suite migrating to Thunderbird, Mr Postman to get at Hotmail & Yahoo
mail accts
browser -- Moz Suite migrating to Firefox, IE for things like WU
NewsGroups -- 40tude Dialog
statistics package -- EPSS
text editor -- Zeus Lite
file manager - explorer2
downloader -- leechget
continuously
antivirus - avast!
antispyware - spysweeper
antiadware - adaware
sticky notes - 3M Postit Notes
There is no network in this case at's a standalone W98SE system, have disabled all
non essential continuous running programs (ie virus scanners etc) to get as close
to a bare bones system as I can, with no impact.

Just curious, did anyone solve this issue? Same problem, used #4 in this MS Windows
Knowledge Base solution. Worked for my situation. Jen

it makes sense when you think about it. I run sygate personal firewall with the
stealth browsing option active.
windows update can't tell that I'm using IE6 and doesn't seem to bother asking the
OS what it actually is and hence says 'you're not windows because I'm not sure that
you *are* windows' end of story.
when I disabled stealth browsing everything worked again!
I hope that helps other people!
