Some of my emails have dissapered

I was scrolling through my inbox in Outlook Express when I suddenly noticed that April and May and June's emails bar the last one I had today had gone!!! I had not deleted any or moved them.It worries me that they can suddenly dissapear just by opening the inbox. This has never happened before in windows 98 SE.I have backed them up with Outlook Express backup but to be able to restore them I will have to register and pay a fee.I thought the software was free. Anyway, can anyone help me shed some light on this mystery? Ian.

You maintain a questionable practice if any of the
default folders are used for long time storage of large
amounts of emails (Inbox/Outbox/Sent Items/Deleted
Items/Draft). OE is known for emails disappearing
particularly from the Inbox. Custom folders should be
used.

Manual maintenance should be done on a regular basis.
Only when you are OFFLINE, open OE. Or if you click
File and choose Work offline.

Click File->Folder. Then choose Compact All Folders.
This will optimize the DBX files. Optimizing takes out all
the wasted space.

Do not check Compact messages in the background.
This can lead to lost emails.
(Tools->Options.  Maintenance Tab)

There are 2 programs mentioned at the site JmC
posted. 1 reasonable and 1 free.

I have located a very nice 3rd program, post back if
you would like the download link.

Sorry, forgot to mention these programs are
all to recover lost emails.
