Disk Defragmentor

I have an older computer passed down from my loving mother, unfortunatly, the computer
runs very slow. I tryed the disk clean up and then the disk defragmentor, and it
will not complete successfully. What happens is, it will complete only up to a certain
% and then restart itself. I'm trying to clean it out, and take everything off of
the hard drive and just start over, my only use for it is talking to my brother in
Iraq in MSN messenger. Which will not download the new version. So just trying
to do some things myself, to help me from spending too much money for someone to
do it. Hope somone can help.
Thank You

I wish the Webmaster would put a giant link to the answer on every page on the site.

Always run scan disk before defrag. You need to close out running programs first,
or those will interfere. Even having a screensaver
'selected' interferes with maintenance.
First, download Windows ME's defrag tool and replace your original. It's about 10x
faster than 98's:
Surecool - ME Defrag
Clear out temp files first: In Internet Options - General tab - delete temporary
internet files and choose 'delete all Offline content'. Clear History. In Settings,
set the size of the TIF folder between 5-10 MB. Empty the contents of the C:\Windows\temp
folder and C:\temp folder, if you have one. Note: some may be in use until you reboot.
You can also clear out more junk files by using Find - Files or folders to search
for several file extensions at a time, if you seperate with a semi-colon and no space.
ex: *.tmp;*.chk. Any of these can go. Just copy/paste these in there, or be sure
to type them correctly, so you don't bring up the wrong files.
*.CHK;*.Gid;*.OLD;*.prv;*.tmp;*.fts;*.ftg;*.diz;*.dir
*.grp;*.$$$;*.bak;chklist;*.ftg;*mscreate.dir
Delete this folder - C:\Windows\Applog. It's not needed and is related to Taskmon's
useless purpose. It'll be re-created at bootup, but it'll be empty. Empty Recycle
bin.
Uncheck Taskmon in 'msconfig' under startup tab: Start - Run - type: MSCONFIG. Hit
Apply. Close all tray applications, then hit Ctl_Alt_Del and End Task on everything
but Explorer and Systray. Disable your screensaver by temporarily setting to "None."
Run scandisk in "Standard" mode then defrag,. First in the defrag settings, uncheck
"rearrange program files so my programs start faster". Reboot when finished.
If you have MS Office program installed, follow M$ instructions on how to kill the
FindFast Indexer, and don't re-enable it. It's a serious resource hog:

the file extentions that you had there in BOLD, are they files that I will not need
on my computer, and to look for those spicific files to remove. I know alittle about
computers, by experience, but when it comes to things deeper into the computer, i'm
not kinda clue-less. Thanks

Yes, those are all temporary, useless files and are safe to get rid of. It was just
an additional suggestion, but if you're not comfortable with it, leave it go but
be sure to clear out the temp folder, etc.

Reformating Hard Drive

okay, another question, since I believe this will be helpful, is there a way for
someone inexperienced to reformat my hard drive? Also, what would cause me to not
be able to download things like AOL instant message and MSN Messenger 7.0
Thanks

.."is there a way for someone inexperienced to reformat my hard drive?"
Well, it depends on how inexperienced you mean. There's more involved, than some
people think. Of course, you'd need a way to reinstall Windows 98. You need download
Win 98 drivers for your hardware, in advance, that Windows doesn't install drivers
for. Locate and write down your Product Code, so you have that on hand. You'll need
to upgrade IE to a newer version, once Windows has been reinstalled.
I have no idea, what would prevent those IM programs from being installed. You may
be able get it running better just by doing some basics first, then deal with installing
those programs. Uninstall programs that you don't want or need. Run the IE repair
tool, and/or upgrade IE, if it's older than version 5.5. Has a spyware scan ever
been done?

well, I couldnt download window me degfrag tool, when i tryed to go to the http://surecool.com
site it just took me to some refridgerating company. The folders that you recommended
to get rid of, my computer couldn't find even when they were done individually
Taskmanager would not close "Rnaapp"; "wsup"; and "wtoolsa". Do you have any ideas
with these? I ran scandisk and found no problems, still couldn't complete defragmenting
past 2% and computer still runs too slow. I think my computer says that I have 2,150,961,152
space however after getting rid of the many things I could, and felt save removing,
it says the "available space" is 230,023,168. THIS IS DRIVING ME NUTS Any more
suggestions?
Thanks

.."when i tryed to go to the http://surecool.com site it just took me to some refridgerating
company."
The URL I posted was to Surecool.net, but that happens ocassionally. Usually, you
can try the link again, and you'll get to the right place.
But, that system is infected with malware, WinTools. Rnaapp is Dial up Networking.
You'll need to get the malware cleaned up, before the maintenance tools will complete.
I'd asked, if you'd ran any scans.
Download and run Spybot S&D and HijackThis, then post the HJT log here. After installing
Spybot, use the integrated update feature and download all updates that aren't optional.
_SpyBot
Search_&_Destroy v1.4
Log off the net, then boot into Safe mode to run a Spybot scan. Before booting into
Safe Mode, check in Add/Remove programs and remove any toolbars, and/or other suspicious
applications, you didn't install yourself (if possible).
How to Start Windows in Safe Mode
Close all open windows, first. Then start Spybot and run the Default mode scan. Once
the scan is finished, 'Check All' and fix everything labeled in RED. Clear out ll
those temp folders again and empty Recycle bin. Reboot normally.
Be sure to get rid of any older versions of HJT and download the current one:
Hijack This 1.99.1 Unzip HJT into a new folder. Example: C:\HJT. It
creates backups of all fixed entries, and they're automatically saved in the same
location. Log off the net, then close all other open windows. Run 'HijackThis.exe.
Click "Do a system scan and save a logfile".
Once the scan is finished, the log will automatically open in Notepad. Select all
and copy/paste the entire log here in a post. Please click "Check this box to
preserve your spacing...", before posting your log.
Note: most of the entries in HiJack This will be harmless or even essential.
Don't fix anything yet. This tutorial has a description of the entries, so you
get an idea what they mean:

Go here to download the Vopt 6.2 defragger:
http://www.vopt.com/archive.htm
It's a fully functional 30-day program, but it's easy to use and probably the quickest
one available. If your old computer has, say, a 10 gig hard drive, expect it to
do the job in less than half-an-hour, maybe even 15 minutes, even if there's quite
a mess to straighten out. This is all you have to do with it:
1. Install and then run it.
2. Under Tools, select Close Applications. It will shut down all unneeded running
programs; however, there still may be a stubborn one or two, i.e. ZoneAlarm firewall,
you'll have to shut down manually. Double-check with control-alt-delete afterwards
to make sure that the only programs running are Explorer and Vopt.
3. Under Tools again, click Erase Free Space.
4. Once free space has been erased of minute trash remnants, click File, then Defragment.
If there's only the A and C drives on your computer, select the C drive to Defragment.
5. Watch it go to work on its view screen as you wait, and then before you know it,
it's done.
There are other features to play with on the Vopt defragger, but unless you intend
to buy the program after the 30 day trial, I wouldn't mess around with them much.
For now, all you need is something that'll just defrag your drive in the easiest
and quickest manner possible.
The home page of Vopt lists a newer version, VoptXP,but I find the older one, version
6.2, still does a better job for 98.

I had the problem of only getting 70 - 85% of my system (98se) to defrag. I ran Skybot
S & D, Adware, Scan and in safe mode. I deleted BellSouth's Pop-up Stopper. I then
ran Diskkeeper (free version) and it completed the job 100%. I enabled Diskkeeper
to run in the background and haven't defrag since then. Diskeeper is downloadable
and I recommend it highly.
