Clean install Windows 98SE and no Audio

I formatted the hard drive and did a clean install with a 98SE CD(not a recovery CD). The audio worked fine before the reinstall. The drivers installed automatically from the driver cd and all is well in the device manager. I have carefully checked to make sure that all the proper boxes are checked and volume controls are turned up in the multimedia controls. There is no sound coming from the speakers or the headphone jack. I reinstalled Windows and the drivers again and gained nothing. I'm positively stumped, could it be a motherboard problem? I value your expertise, Thank You

If you have on board sound it could have gotten disabled in the BIOS. Worth a check but I doubt if Device manager would say it was working.

Make sure the speaker power is turned on. had a fried that had battery powered speakers and he had a hard time finding the problem. Has to be a connection or power problem to the speakers I would think.

Do you get the sound that windows gives as the desktop comes on the screen or is it just cd music you don't hear?

I had this same problem on an old Packard Bell when I used SE instead of the recovery disk. Take a look inside on either your sound card or the mobo if it's an "onboard" sound set up, usually the chip has a recognizable name or number on it. Just do a google search for the driver and you'll be good to go.
