Dial up modem problems.

I am using Win98 with a 56K Conextant modem. I use AOL 9.0 as my provider. Whenever I try to dial up I usually make it to step three (Connected at XXXXXXbps) and then it freezes up and redials. If I leave the computer dialing for long periods of time it will connect every once in a while. Something like 1 out of 50 tries or so. I have also tried different providers and get the same outcome. I have had this problem for a while and ive tried everything I could think of. It would be greatly appreciated if you guys could help me out. Thanks, Ed

Try this:

My Computer > DUN

Right click your default connection.

Properties > General > Configure > Connection

Set Cancel the call if not connected within to a larger value. It is probably at 30 seconds, so change it to 45. If that doesn't work, change it to an even larger value.

If that doesn't work try this specialized help site:

modemsite.com/56k

I would recommend installing newer "generic" conextant modem device drivers if you have not already tried it. Conexant chipset modem drivers. Problem is sorting out exactly what chip set you have and which generic drivers you need for your modem.

If that does not work better, maybe move your system to somewhere else like a friends who lives closer to the local phone switching station and try it. There could be a problem with your phone line like excessive noise, bad wire connections in your house, an alarm system, or just too far from the phone switching station. This would tell you if it is a house wiring problem or a problem with the modem/drivers.

The conextant chip sets work OK if you have "clean" phone lines and are not too far from the phone switching station. But they do poorly if you have any line noise or live far from the phone company switching station (has nothing to do with which ISP the phone company connects you to).

Personally, I would get rid of the Conextant modem and use a Lucent/Agere chipset modem like the cheap Agere chipset modem. They have much better device drivers that come with it.
