Extended RAM failed at offset 1A

I have an HP 8750C Pavilion, 667Mhz running WIN98 with original 64M of SDRAM. Phoenix BIOS version 1.10 I have just purchased a new memory stick and installed it in second bank. At boot-up the system returns the above error . The system does recognize the new extended SDRAM and new the total installed memory for banks The new SDRAM is PC133 256M though Can I run mix speed memory sticks on this HP ? The computer specs said it supports both speed. The sale guy said it "should" work ! When I put the new stick in slot 1, it failed to boot completely. Does this mean I have a bad memory stick ?.. It is brand new. Any suggestions ? Thanks for your help Loc

Your machine won't support High Density RAM which is about all that is sold anymore. You have to specify Low Density of the same speed (preferably) and it should marked as such. Spec 133 LD RAM will usually clock down to 100. HD (High Density) is not backward compatible IME with Spec 100 and won't mix well. Additionally, better to either order it from HP or go to a site like Kingston or Crucial, look up your machine and use the recommended memory. Those PC manufacturers had a habit of using out of the ordinary spec modules sometimes. Outside of that, it "could" be bad memory if you want to try and return it for another stick. Also make sure that the machine will handle the size, combo, and module config of memory that you are trying to use. In other words, sometimes you can use a 256 module but it must be double sided (usually LD).. If you purchased a single sided 256 module, it won't work in older machines. Your owners manual should tell you for sure. Good Luck.

This is the correct spec for your system and it is double sided LD. This is a 256
module:

When you take the new module back, make sure this is the spec you get. If they can't
verify what they are selling you, go some place that can. Note, in the above page
link two of the spec listings. CL-2 and the 32 X 64.. The 64 number can NOT be
any higher. If it is, it's wrong for your computer. Also check HP's website that
no BIOS update is necessary to run the full capacity of RAM. Sometimes the BIOS
needed to be upgraded for early versions of the same computer model series. Good
Luck!! :-)

One correction...

I shouldn't type when I am sleeping! ;-) Your computer can handle RAM with a designation of 16 or 64 where the 32 X "64" spec is. A number of 16 is for the smaller RAM modules that you have now. A computer must be capable of using a 512 meg module in the mem slots to use High Density RAM. (Greater than 1 gig total in 2 or more slots) They would have a designation of something like 64 X 4 which not many computers can use. Only the last of certian chipsets before DDR ram came out can do so. All others must use Low Density modules, FYI when buying them. Computers that can use High density modules can also use Low Density RAM but not the other way around. Have fun!! :-)

Hey C.K You're absolutely correct !. I got a new 16-chip stick , PC133 and it works just fine now (all total 320M of SDRAM...the wife loves the surfing now !). I didn't have to upgrade or change anything in BIOS or move the sticks around in different banks. The returned RAM didn't have any problems either as it was tested in the store PC and it came up fine (4 chip, double side). I took your advice and got new stick even though the sale guys who sold me the stuff didn't know whether it would work...He suggested to bring the PC in for them to check (charge ~ $45)....I said no-thank and took a chance with the new stick. Also did chat with the HP support tech last night before posted the question on this forum and the person was clueless. First of all the person told me the PC doesn't support PC133 , then retracted and apologized after I sent the PC specs. Then the person told me it's a bad mem and the solution is get a new one and make sure I don't run the two memory sticks together...I'm in tech support also and completely PC illiterate but the support was bad !. Sorry about the rant Again thank you for taking time to answer my questions. Cheers Loc

Hey no prob on the rant! LOL You sure hear all kinds of stories. What they sold you was HD (4 chip double sided) and what they gave you now is LD so it will fall back to PC 100 when you add it in with a PC 100 module or if the FSB is set to 100. If you can set the FSB to 133 (by MB jumper or in the BIOS) and run only that module, you would get a slight increase in speed during some operations, such as mem intensive ones. The HD won't fall back or clock down to PC 100, in fact the good manufacturers usually put warnings on them for not being backward compatible. Most of the gerenics/OEM won't have a warning at all! :-( So all in all, it should work fine now. Good Luck!!
