Extremely slow computer - Windows 98

Hi - my computer has become extremely slow. I've updated and run AdAware, Spybot,
and have ZoneAlarm installed. I've defragmented the drive, and kept my previous Norton
up to date, and have recently run all of the possible fixes in my new Norton Systemworks
2005 and new Registry Mechanic, but the speed hasn't changed. I've searched this
forum, for additional possibilities - but I was wondering what the odds are that
my RAM is bad, and is there a way to test it? I tried CheckIt Diagnostics, and it
said the memory was fine, but that program is new to me.
(Your forum is great - I stumbled on it searching for another problem, and the solution
was perfect.)

NAV has become a resource hog in recent years.
There are any number of better alternatives.
How much useless junk are you allowing to run at startup?

We are talking about digital (binary) devices here.
They either work or they don't.
If you aren't getting error messages or outright failures, your RAM is OK.

Continued searching and answered my own question - found a free Ram tester listed
on your forum , will try it out.
Posted by Olivier
I use it all the time to test new RAM modules or new RAM timings...

Another such free one is memtest86, released under GPL :

Sadly, it's a common complaint. Win 9X is subject to "bloat" and that's why those
of us who have been using Windows since 1.0 would reinstall our systems a couple
of times a year as it will just keep slowing down, even without infections and spyware.
It's even worse now. Your RAM isn't the source of the problem as you would have
other errors and failures. Here is MS' mem checker which I use more than the others
except for a hardware tester which is the best at finding RAM failures. Software
won't find them all..
http://oca.microsoft.com/en/windiag.asp
Bottom line is that if you can't find the source of the slow down, you may have to
reinstall the operating system after backing up your data. It's pretty much normal
for 95/98. NT/2000/XP is much more resistant to the problems suffered by Win 9X
systems. You could also have some other obscure hardware problems that won't be
detectable yet. Win 98 doesn't have the event viewer that NT has to help in troubleshooting
those types of problems. :-( Good Luck!

XP INFO XP CLEANUP
Norton System Works is really too heavy for Windows '98 if you allow everything it
has to offer to start up when Windows Starts. Better to use the features manually
and only allow the Anti-Virus protection and the Firewall to run all the time.
I would use AVG and Zone Alarm in preference. But with such a demanding program you
should have at least 512 MB of RAM but it still won't help with system resources
as such as this is part of the operating system architecture and cannot be increased.

Sage advice from Mac again.
I'll take it one step further:
Current versions of Zone Alarm are also bloated.
The oldest version you can get will do everything you need--with a smaller footprint.

AVG == Anti-Virus, Grisoft
