Boot sector

Simple problem. Anti virus says that boot sector on C cannot be read. Still, I am able to boot my computer, load Windows, and everything works fine… except for scandisk, that doesn't work well running under Win (although it runs fine in DOS) ; and defrag, which is unable to make up an overview of all the clusters, and therefore isn't able to defrag at all. How can I fix this boot sector (reading) error without damaging the content of the hard drive ? Thanks.

You can try this:

Fdisk /MBR

It can't hurt, and it just may be what is needed. There is a space, I'm fairly certain, between the "K" character and the forward slash.

Yup.

Yann,
Your system has a backup copy of the Master Boot Record.
This is going to try to use that to fix the busted one.

Doesn't matter. A forward slash is a valid separator character in DOS.

"It can't hurt"...know what the consequences of your posts are! NOT A GOOD IDEA WITHOUT DETAILS....

Warning: Writing the master boot record to the hard disk in this manner can
make certain hard disks partitioned with SpeedStor unusable. It can also cause
problems for some dual-boot programs and disks with more than four partitions.

FDISK /MBR Rewrites the Master Boot Record

This procedure may be all that's necessary. At least it's totally harmless.....
  1. Restart your computer using a Win98 boot disk, select option 2 on the Startup menu and then press ENTER.
  2. At the A:\> prompt, type: SYS C: (note the 1 space) and press ENTER. The following files will then be copied to the drive: * IO.SYS * MSDOS.SYS * COMMAND.COM
  3. If the procedure is successful, a 'System transferred' message will appear. If it is not successful, check to be sure you are typing the correct drive letter for your Host Drive.
  4. Remove the boot disk and restart your system.
