Hmmm.. not good senario. Without knowing exactly what went wrong, your best bet is to insert "correct" recovery disk and re-install. ;)

There are two basic types of recovery CDs. One contains the full operating system,
and maybe some programs that came with the PC. Such a CD would be very "full", or
might be multiple CDs. The other only contains a recovery program and assumes that
the recovery image is contained in a hidden partition on the hard drive. Such a
CD would be mostly "empty". You should be able to tell the difference by examining
the CD in a working computer. Examine the "correct" recovery CD only. CAUTION:
Be sure that the other PC is on before inserting the CD, since you do not want to
start the recovery process, just look at the CD.

Assuming that the correct CD is a full CD, try using it to recover the first PC;
that should work. If it is a mostly-empty CD, you can try to use it. But, if it
fails to work, then the accidental application of the "wrong" recovery CD may have
erased the hidden image. In such a case, contact the PC maker and see whether you
can get them to send you a new recovery image on CD(s). Note that instead of a CD,
they may offer to send a new hard drive with a hidden image. They will probably
want to charge you for the service. Compare any cost to buying a retail copy of
the operating system, plus any software included with the PC, and for which you do
not have installation CDs. Also, be very precise as to the model number, serial
number, etc., when contacting the PC maker.

This message is probably correct, 'No Operating System'. You can try this, it will
reinstall the files necessary for Windows to boot. If you reach a C:\> prompt after
this procedure, try typing WIN and pressing enter.
  1. Restart your computer using a Win98 boot disk, select option 2 on the Startup menu and then press ENTER.
  2. At the A:\> prompt, type: SYS C: (note the 1 space) and press ENTER. The following files will then be copied to the drive: * IO.SYS * MSDOS.SYS * COMMAND.COM
  3. If the procedure is successful, a 'System transferred' message will appear.
  4. Remove the boot disk and restart your system.
You can create a Win98 boot disk on any Win98 system. Select 'Add/Remove Programs' in Control Panel and then the 'Startup Disk' tab. You can also download a small program from BootDisk.com. The standard version is here: Win98 SE Run the downloaded file on any Windows system, and it will create the boot disk for you.
