WMP9 Won't Play CDs

Hi, all.

Win98SE, Samsung CD-ROM SC-148F, Lite-on DVDRW SOHW-1653S cd-rom drives

I cannot play CDs with WMP9.
This is independent of which cd-rom drive I use.

When clicking the cd-rom drive, or trying to open one of the .cda files therein,
WMP gives me an error message saying that it “...encountered an error when reading
the CD-ROM in digital mode. Click “OK” to switch to analog mode”.

(The same happens when I insert a CD and WMP opens in response.)

Clicking OK gives another message:
“WMP encountered an error when reading the CD-ROM in digital mode. You can try to
use digital mode again, or you can switch the player to analog mode”.

It doesn’t say how to switch to analog mode, but in the Help pages I found:
“Your hardware (CD-ROM drive and speakers) determines whether you can play tracks
by using digital or analog audio. You should select the settings that work best with
your hardware.”
and...
"To use digital playback
- On the Tools menu, click Options.
- Click the Devices tab.
- In Devices, select the CD-ROM drive, and then click Properties.
- In Playback, click Digital."

Clicking on Tools\Options\Devices shows me my CD drives, but selecting properties
produces nothing – no “Properties”.

However, the little Windows CD-Player (Start/Programs/Accessories/Entertainment/CD
Player) plays disks in the cd-rom drive OK.

And so does Winamp.

In all other aspects, WMP works fine – mp3, wav, mpg...etc.

I have reinstalled WMP9 and the k-lite Codec Pack, to no avail.

Any ideas, anyone?

Regards,

kb-r

kbr,

Open WMP, click on tools, select options, click on the File Types tab and put a check
mark in "Play Music CD"

re: WMP9 Won't Play CDs - Solved (well, "resolved")

Hi.

Thanks for your interest.

All the requirements seem to be met for WMP9, and it has worked OK in the past.

"Open WMP... tools... File Types... mark in "Play Music CD"
That's the point - no options were available - ditto in Device Manager thru' other
routes.

Anyway, in the wee small hours, I uninstalled WMP9 and installed WMP7. I must admit,
it was nice to see the old familiar face again... However...

WMP7 worked fine - all inputs and formats. But going to Tools, Options, Formats
produced "Registry Error" and "WMPLAYER caused an invalid page fault in module WMPUII.dll..."
It still worked OK, with all available inputs and formats, but...

More searching for various combinations of words, etc, produced this very interesting
page:
http://erpman1.tripod.com/current/wmp9del.htm whereon it is noted that one can't
just uninstall WMP9 by the usual method, and how to go about removing all traces
of it from the PC - in great detail, with millions (well, lots) of .dll files and
stuff to be removed.

I did all that was suggested, then reinstalled WMP7, and everything works fine -
except that it wants to update by downloading and installing WMP9! (I suspect that
if I were so to do, I'd then have a working WMP9 installation again! But that can
wait - for now.)

Incidentally, I have noticed in my searchings various requests for a source of WMP7;
I found it here: http://www.blazeaudio.com/wmp7/

Once again, thank you for your input.

Regards

kbr

Good work. Good post.
