Boot fails after asking for 'dfs.vxd' file.

Hi, on booting I am informed that there are files missing that windows might need and to press any key to continue. When the boot gets to the last one of these (there are about 3 I think) 'dfs.vxd' and after I have presses a key the boot process freezes. I have to then switch the computer off at the mains and select a start up with step by step confermation which, if I'm lucky, will enable me to start Windows. I have done a SFC and it finds no files missing. What can I do to get my system booting normaly ?......

Have you entered the file name in any search engine? Even the one here for the forums? Because I'm relatively sure I saw similar questions going through here before now. If my memory is halfway accurate, your symptoms may point toward a malware infection. Run the local search at least.

Hi, yeah I did have a google. It seemed too complicated so I have reinstalled windows. Now I can start my computer. Thanks for the reply.

The definition of "too complicated" is a subjective one. Too typically, I have a ton of stuff on a PC and a reinstall is not at all simple here on my systems. On the other hand, with a Ghosted Image of the boot partition, a wipe and replace is fairly simple to perform.

Actually my solution may not have been the best really. For starters the re-install wiped my Linux partition and as I didn't do a full wipe and install it's quite possible that the malware that might have been causing the problem is still there/here. My subscribed connection isn't working at all so prehaps I DO need to do what you suggested the first time around...........

Are you sure it didn't just clear out your boot loader?
Microsoft is a real bastard when it comes to the boot sector.
Windoze always thinks it is the *only* OS
and overwrites the boot sector without any consideration.

Getting Linux back may be as easy as this:

Your duplicate thread is gone now. So is a caution that was addressed to you in it. Dealing with online P2P file sharing is merely asking for infections; it's a "poorly policed" (Ha!) environment in which the files are as likely to be loaded with malware as they are to be clean.
