Someone sent me a xls file, but I cannot open them. I downloaded it and it came as
Lotus Approach. I don't know how to open them.
Is anyone there who can help me with these files?
Thank you.

An XLS file is the default extension to an Excel Worksheet.

If you do not own a spreadsheet program, write back to the sender of the files to
ask for a file viewer to go with them. Most Microsoft programs (Excel is part of
MS Office) come with viewers that are freely distributable. Or use Quickview (it
came on the Win98se install disk).

I finally was able to open the file. It was right there Quickview. I kept clicking
on open. Now, how can I print that file?
Thank you for your help.

Quickview will print page one of an xls spreadsheet file

You'll need that special Excel viewer if the file in question is on multiple pages.
If it's all on one sheet, Quickview will shrink it small enough to fit on one 8
1/2 by 11, and that's assuming it's readable that small.

If (as Kiwi noted), you run into a limitation with the freebie viewer,
there is a full office suite that is gratis (and libre).
and is a replacement for M$ Office[1]. http://www.openoffice.org
You will need to download the install file for the entire suite[2]. (~75MB) 8-(
If, however, all you need is "Calc" (the spreadsheet program),
do a custom install and specify only that.
OTOH, if you install all of it, you get modules for
word processing, presentation (PowerPoint), database, and drawing as well.

+VB-macros
[2] If you don't have the Java Runtime Environment installed,
go ahead and get the Win32 version which includes that.

re: xls files -- OpenOffice.org

As I have written, I was able to open and see the file. Now I am having problem with
printing it. When I click on File it only gives me one option: Open file for editing.
How can I print that file? I have 123 Lotus, which is a worksheet and I don't know
if that is of any help. I am new to all this, therefore is a little more difficult
to do the procedure.
Thanks.

That certainly sounds like a LIMITATION to me.
Have you tried Ctrl+P? (I'm not optimistic.)
Perhaps this M$ "freebie" was never meant to allow you to print.
(That would be $$ out of BillG's pocket.)

This still holds true--and THIS is not crippleware.

AFAIK, any version of Quickview has the print capability, but I could be wrong.
I've had "Quickview Plus" for many years, probably got my first version while running
Win95, before Microsoft put a copy of a trial version in Win98.
While viewing the XLS spreadsheet using Quickview, there is a toolbar with a printer
icon that you can click on.
