corrupt cab files ?

I have a strange problem.
I am trying to install windows 98 on a newly formated hard drive This is on a Toshiba
Tecra 8100 500mhz with
64mb ram laptop and 10gb hard drive
I got it used and it came with xp which was working fine
untill I tried to install acrobat reader and I was getting
corrupt cab error.
Since I did not have an xp cd I formated the hard drive
and tried to install windows 98 but I got stoped right at the begining with a corrupt
setup cab file I tried to narrow down the problem and eliminated some of the ones
already discussed here
I copied the files to a partition that I made on the hard drive and tried to install
from there in order to eliminate the cd but I have the same problem. I also tried
loading
other programs from different cd's with similar corrupt
cab errors I also tried different linux version but they all had different errors.
I also bought another larger 30mb hard drive and I still have the same problem
I am trying to extract the files manually but I can only extract a couple of files
before I get a corrupt cab error
I am running out of things I can try.
I was wondering if anyone came across this strange problem on a pc or especially
on a laptop
I ran scandisk many times without any errors
This situation only leaves the memory or the motherboard combination.

Greg,
Contact Toshiba about acquiring replacement Restore CD's. They may also be available
on Ebay through this link.
Windows 98, unless it's for the Tecra 8100, and exact model # will not have the drivers
you need. I believe they came both ways. XP and Win98SE.
http://search.ebay.com/_W0QQfgtpZ1QQfrppZ50QQfsooZ1QQfsopZ1QQsassZsweeney0
Before you buy anything, make sure it is for your System, EXACTLY. Close ain't good
enough with Laptops. Go by Toshiba ID numbers only. First, though, Try Toshiba. They
may still be available.
Good hunting.Try google for Toshiba Accessories.

It is a hardware problem. Could be caused by any piece of hardware without a more
specific error code. Memory or CD drive, cable etc. If those are OK, then you are
looking at a device on the motherboard being defective. In that case, it isn't worth
repairing. I would remove the memory module(s), clean the contacts with a pencil
eraser, reinstall them and try again. If that doesn't help here is a mem tester
to try:
http://oca.microsoft.com/en/windiag.asp
If no problems are found, then you are looking at a CD ROM/cabling issue or the motherboard
is bad.

Thanks for the tip.
I will give that a try.
That link to ebay says that it has the driver for my model but are you saying that
is not good enough ?
Are you saying that I need a specific driver for my particular Toshiba ID number
?
Wow, that's hard to believe.
That's almost like looking for the needle in the haystack
I miight as well give up on this laptop right now
Tell me this isn't so.

Thanks for the reply.
I was wondering if a driver for this laptop might help.
as in the reply that I got to my post.
I don't have any drivers for this laptop . I am just using
the bootdisk and the windows 98 cd from my regular pc
I just got a driver for my cd rom so I can boot from
the c: drive so I don't have to use the floppy but that's
it.
I just got a new set of ram modules and installed them
and made no difference so that only leaves the motherboard as strange as that may
sound so I guess that's next

I agree with C_K: If you are getting corrupted files from several different drives
and sources then you are most likely dealing with a bad peice of hardware, be it
memory, chipset or other. Drivers will not be the fix - Windows 98se will load with
the barest essentials (BIOS) and then load the drivers later. The quickest thing
to try is to re-seat all the connections - Memory, cables CPU etc. Secondly - check
for a BIOS update: Along the drivers thinking... could be a corrupted BIOS.

I tend to agree that it must be a hardware problem.
I just got a reply from the driver seller on ebay and
he said that some of the files are compressed so even if I could use the drivers
I could not load them on the laptop because they have to be decompressed
The BIOS I don't know how to check if it's corrupted or not and I am not even sure
if it's worth trying.
By the time I find the right upgrade and figure out how to do it I could just by
another motherboard and hopefully be done with it I just hope I don't pick up another
bad one.

I disagree with hardware problem diagnosis totally. Bob Wells has the only good
advice because your Toshiba laptop is expecting to process proprietary Toshiba constructed
cab files you are getting corrupt cab file errors at every turn. Only a Toshiba
Restore CD for your laptop will reinstall Windows for you. So don't waste money
on a motherboard until you have the CD and have tried it first.
Most laptops along with Dell, Compaq and few other desktop computers have a hidden
partition on their hard drive that perform some BIOS functions and also is a safe
(secure) place for proprietary drivers especially for CDROM and DVD drives and the
like. This is why only the proper Restore CD can be used to reinstall Windows on
your Laptop. The Restore CD is also the only way to rebuild that hidden partition.
It's been that way since the first laptop - so believe it.

You may be right since I don't know too much about laptops but your statement doesn't
make sense to me.
"because your Toshiba laptop is expecting to process proprietary Toshiba constructed
cab files you are getting corrupt cab file errors at every turn"
My laptop is trying to process windows 98 cab files
not proprietary Toshiba constructed cab files and why should that cause corrupt cab
file errors,
If it needed some special software I think I should get a different error message.
How would it process it's proprietary cab files if it cannot load then in the first
place ?
I would be curious if anyone knows what kind of proprietary drivers there are on
this hidden sector and if there is any software that can access or maybe dump
the information from the hidden sector to a file
The cdrom and dvdrom should make no difference
since they can be replaced with other brands.
About the only thing I can think of is maybe the video
and sound since they cannot be replaced so I will get the
restore cd for that if the windows 98 drivers won't work
Also I believe it has a self diagnostic tool that can be usefull too

I just wanted to follow up on this subject to close it out
I just got my dvd rom today that I got on ebay and I swapped it with the cd rom I
had in there and seems to be working now.
No more corrupt files messages.I was able to load windows 98 without the restore
cd but I will get it
just to get the sound working and the display a better
resolution.
I was also able to load linux without any errors
I noticed that the dvd rom is playing the cd much quieter
and smoother not like the cd rom that had a vibration noise even though I think they
both play at 24x.
This is just speculation on my part but I think because
the cd was vibrating during access, it may not read the data correctly so I would
get corrupt files.
What fooled me was that I was able to copy from the cd
without any errors but when I went to ectract the cab files from the hard drive then
I would get a corrupt error message.
I guess the copy program does not provide error messages so even though the copy
was successfull
the data may have already been corrupted
I want to thank Bob Wells for the link to the restore cd
They have restore cd for other computer brands too not just Toshiba so that's a good
place to buy them from
I also want to thank everyone for sharing their ideas
It was a good learning experience for me
Thanks.
Bye
