Switching IDE Master and Slave HDD's

My computer has 2 HDD's, one Primary IDE Master, and one Primary IDE Slave. What
i'm trying to do is switch which HDD the computer recognizes as the Master and which
is recognized at the Slave. The problem I'm having is that when I opened up the
computer, the Master drives jumper was set to "Master", but the Slave drives jumper
was set to Cable set. What would I do to make the Master HDD the Slave and the Slave
HDD the Master (i.e. where would I set the jumpers, which IDE's would I use, etc)?

It's "Cable Select", and that is often how drives are shipped when new. Because
the system can tell which of the two is attached to the farthest end, and that is
always the Master, but both should not have their jumpers the same, either.
Whichever one you choose to be Master should be jumpered that way, as well as attached
at the end, then the other is attached in the middle, with its jumper (usually)
set to be the Slave.

Andrew,
Unless there is an operating System On the CURRENT Slave drive, I would not recommend
the change you're attempting. The Master Jumper tells windows which drive to look
for for the Boot sector. At the very least you'll have to go into the BIOS and change
the Boot Drive to #2 HDD.
Post back with what you are trying to accomplish with this HDD switch.

Right now the OS on the current Master drive is, as far as I can tell, completely
messed up to the point where its impossible to fix, unless someone here knows how
to fix it. Anyway, the problem is, I cant just reformat the current Master drive
because I would lose some things that i'd like to save (pictures, text files, etc.)
So, I figure if i can just make my spare Slave HDD the Master HDD, I can just install
a fresh OS on it, and salvage whatever I can off the old one.

andrew,
Pull the Hdd and install it in another Win98 system. Recover what you can, then reinstall,
Fdisk/format and do a clean install of your OS. Lots less trouble.

This Question does not belong on this forum. This in not a Win 98 question and should
not have been posted here. While we all like to help - this is the wrong place for
this question. It belongs in a hardware or troubleshooting forum.
