Question about 'Using .CAB Files'
Tuesday, April 4, 2006 at 12:22 pm
Posted by Cat Travers (1 messages posted)

I have a question about Using .CAB Files:

My hard drive is getting full, and I'm trying to delete unused files. I have five 2 mg cab files in my C:\Windows\Sysbckup folder that are all dated within the last week, when I uninstalled Quicken, and deleted a necessary .dll file that the Quicken uninstall program erroneously told me was "no longer in use." I couldn't recall how to install a single file from my win98SE disk, so I tried several things before I got it right, and I suspect that's when the cab files were created. Is it OK to delete them now? I assume the .dll file has been extracted to the appropriate folder. If not, will I be prompted to reinstall whatever I need from the win98 disk, or am I playing with fire, here? Thanks for your help!

Cat,

I would no delete anything in Windows\SysBackup Folder. I especially would not delete
any .cab Files. It's very doubtful that anything you did would create .Cab files
and placed them in Sysbackup without you knowing about it.

While on the subject, if you are looking for more HDD space do not look within the
Windows Folder. Try program files first. My Documents is also a good place to look
for wasted space.

Unless you have a very small HDD there is not enough space in the whole Windows folder
to make a difference.

Hi,
In your situation I would try and find out what my memory guzzlers were. I have
a program called treesize.exe which can list every folder in order of memory taken.
Alternatively use the find files facility and find on the C drive all files over
a certain size say 500kb. To do this select the 'c' drive put in *.* and on the
advance tab select files with a 'minimum size of say 500kb. This will direct you
to where the large files are. You can then decide to either uninstall the program,
delete the files, or convert the files. One of the common memory guzzlers are BMP
picture files which can easily be converted to jpg format with a reduced quality
with no on screen visible difference. Be a little bit careful on this as some programs
need some picture files in BMP format and if you are printing the picture file, especially
if enlarged, you might want to stick with the BMP format or a high quality jpg.

Memory was not the posters problem. If her disk is getting full, the way to fix that
is download another program? I think NOT.

Hi,

I suggest you read the question again and I quote" My hard drive is getting full,
and I'm trying to delete unused files". ... The aspect of the CAB files is a secondary
issue!

As regards downloading another program is concerned it is a very small program 300kb
and could easily be deleted after she has finished with it.... I think so!

You ARE playing with fire!! The 2 meg cab files in your Sysbckup folder are your registry back up files. They are created each day that you boot up such that you may revert to an older registry by running scanreg /restore from a DOS boot. It's good advise that you leave these files alone and allow them to overwrite themselves. The cab files that you seem to want to delete are possibly in your Windows\Options\Cabs folder. These would be your local copy of the Windows installation cab files as found on your installation CD. Every file that is in your Win98 folder on the CD can safely be removed from your hard drive. The local copy of those cab files may be somewhere else, so use Find files for base4.cab file as an example. And they may not be on your hard drive at all.
