Fatal Exception 06 Error

I am now in a pinch and need you guys/girls help.
Error:
"A fatal exception 06 has occurred at 0028:00000017. The current application will be terminated."
followed by the options to press any key to terminate the application or to ctrl/alt/del.
This occurs whenever I restart or even cold/warm boot-up, pressing a key or even ctrl/alt/del usually loops right back to the same error message.
I was only able to get back to the Desktop today by using the reset on the CPU.
I can boot into Safe Mode with true drivers okay and move around just fine.

Steps taken so far:

(1) scanreg /restore No change...
(2) scanreg /fix No change...
(3) ran SFC No System File Corruption found
(4) thorough scan disk No errors, and defragged in safe mode
(5) Checked device manager/msconfig/control panel for anything unusual
---I have up to date anti virus--at least it was before I scanreg'd, and have run Spybot S&D, and have had SpywareBlaster and SpywareGuard installed (and updated) for a long time...
(6) talked with my phone tech support No help other then suggesting a reinstall since a secondary problem is I am experiencing an abnormal slow system with 196608KB (X 1024KB per Megabyte) of Ram.
Possible HDD dying???, will be 9 years old this coming summer... I upgraded to Win98 from Win95 and have no capability that I know of to check out the HDD.

I have yet to go into msconfig to try the process of elimination by unchecking things (most are already unchecked) and rechecking them in order to locate the application, if in fact it is an application producing this error, since, like I said, I have slow down problems along with the problem of getting back to the desktop.

I can't think of anything else I have tried, any ideas will be highly appreciated...

Dan

Dan,

Good to hear you found a solution. Want to share more than your joy? Like how'd ya
fix it? Might help someone else in the future.

Thanks Larry,
As you can see I solved it earlier. I am sure the site I was searching on is similar to one of those on that KB Article you gave me, I will check it out later on as I do not have that particular KB Article saved. At any rate, I started there once I found out that Windows does not cause these errors, but has the "handling routine for that particular processor exception."
Thanks again...

Dan

I would refer them to the KB Article that Larry posted. I corrected mine by running AutoRepair and WinOptimize Programs...
It appears I must have had some conflict/corruption within the msconfig StartUp.
