screen freeze

Hi, i'm running windows 98, with explorer 6. I seem to get random screen freezes,
and i have to re-boot.
Some sites don't cause this but it happens quite offten when i check yahoo mail,
and get to the inbox. Also happens on ebay, and about everytime i get to the front
page of the U.S post office web site.
I'm sure it has something to do with active-x and java. I have updated 98 and explorer
as much as i can.
Any solutions or answers?

That's a given if you're posting here.

Nope.
EXPLORER.EXE == Windows Explorer == Explorer
IEXPLORE.EXE == Internet Explorer == MSIE, IE, M$IE, Internet Exploder

Using Internet Explorer to browse is the least safe, least stable way.
There are 3 browsers which are more secure and more stable
and are available for free:
Firefox is Mozilla's browser-only offering.
http://www.mozilla.com/firefox/releases/#download
The Mozilla Seamonkey suite
also includes an email client[1]/ newsreader as well as an HTML editor.
http://www.mozilla.org/projects/seamonkey/releases/
Opera become freeware in September 2005 (no on-screen ad frame any more).
http://www.opera.com/download/index.dml?platform=windows
2 years ago CERT (Computer Emergency Readiness Team)
--the computer security experts at the Department of Homeland Security--
said **STOP USING INTERNET EXPLORER**.
"Because it came with Windoze"
is no reason to continue to use the #1 vector for infections (Internet Explorer)
for everyday browsing.
The more you use M$IE, the greater the chance it will become broken
and/or infect the rest of your system.
(You will still need it to go to Microsoft sites
and will have to get it fixed for that.)
When a Windoze system starts behaving strangely,
the 1st thing to do is scan it for infections:[2]
Dealing With Spyware & Parasites -- Microsoft Most Valuable Professionals
http://www.mvps.org/winhelp2002/unwanted.htm
[1] This is a replacement for the #2 vector for system infection: Outlook Express.
[2] This is especially true if you use Internet Exploder as your day-to-day browser
and even more apt if you also use Outbreak Express.

mick,
If you're still running Win98 First Edition, rather than 98SE,
I would recommend an update to 98SE if at all possisle. This would be a plus for
you whether you go with Mobzilla, Opera, or choose to stick with Internet Explorer.

So how would i go about upgrading to SE, without having to buy the whole thing again.
If that is the case i'll just buy 2000, although it still costs quite a bit, even
more than XP. But this PC i'm using is to old to use XP.

Complete rubbish.
IE is universally known as the browser with the WORST security.
The people who gave you these OPINIONs are living in a daze.
Try to get them to give you some FACTS that refute these:

mick,
Check out eBay. Usually several for sale there. You can either go with upgrade or
full install version.
Full install is probably best, some will upgrade as well. Be sure to get one that
specifies product key included.
Expect to pay $50.00, less if you're lucky.

I have been checking ebay. If i do have to spend that much i'm just going to get
2000 full. I really don't see a need to keep 98 anymore. Besides support will stop
soon.

Mick,
If your computer came with Win98 First edition it's doubtful Windows200 will run
very well. You're probably ok on Ram, but I doubt you'll have the processor speed
fpr 2K. Good idea to check out compatibility before jumping into OS upgrade.
