monitor image oscillates in size

When using the web, my monitor has started to make the images oscillate in size--with
a period of second or so.
It is very annoying.
And it is new.
How do I fix it.
I have win 98, a ctx monitor on a pentium machine.
I also notice something similar ( less severe) when running Linux Fedora core 1.
I keep win98 because it has VFAT and it is easier to read windows files in linux.
Also for certain video players. I don't want to upgrade to a later Windows--I like
98.
How do I fix this--as simply as possible.
Please email me, as well as posting.
Thanks
Penny

Have you tried a different monitor?
It sounds like a beat frequency.
This happens on old TV sets when their electrolytic capacitors dry up
and the power grid freq / vertical deflection freq beat (60.00Hz vs ~59.94Hz).

"less severe". Hmmm.

Yeah--then there's the *can't write NTFS yet* thing.

Tried Wine?

I haven't seen a CTX monitor in years so I would say it's pretty old. It is getting
weak and at some point will blow out if it's doing that. The more electrons it has
to throw at the screen (to fill the screen with light) the more demand on the circuits
or CRT tube. Instability results and it can wobble or fluctuate with a "beat"..
Time to replace it I would say, but probably the whole computer at some point as
Win 98 is or is close to being unsupported and your machine probably won't handle
XP or the new operating system that should be coming out early next year.
As for second part of your question. Not quite sure what you are wanting to know.
NTFS can't written read from Win 9X or Linux so you are stuck with Win 9X depending
on your needs. The monitor you can replace easily, the computer is another story
however...

Thanks everyone.
I fixed the problem:
I needed to resize the desktop to be larger.
I did that by rightclicking on the desktop and going to properties and resizing.
Windows had shrunk the screen weeks ago during a restart and that was the source
of the instability.
As to Linux, it's probably a similar problem.

As to Win 98 and Linux. I have stuck to Win 98 for exactly that reason: Because Win
98 uses VFAT, it's
more Linux compatible.
But, someone has told me that I can ask for VFAT when installing newer Windows!
And, yes, my computer is getting quite old, but it does what I need, so I am currently
putting up with it. Money is tight.

Wonder what happened to my post? Oh well.. I assume you need the VFAT extension
for Linux so as to use long file names.. VFAT is just an extension of a FAT12/16/32
file system, not an actual file system (for those who don't know). Yes, XP can be
run on FAT32 without a problem (as long as you stay below 137 gig, 120 gig to be
safe IME as corruption can result). Trouble is that NT systems (W2K and XP) will
not format a FAT 32 drive/partition over 32 gig natively, and NTFS is the standard
file system used for manufactured computers, unless you have someone build one for
you and specify FAT32. Formatting FAT32 must be done before W2K/XP is installed
or with a third party utility such as Paritition Magic (if you want larger partitions/drives/logical
drives). Not sure how VFAT will work with XP as I haven't tried it and haven't needed
it for years now on my machines (since XP was released) but it shouldn't be a problem..
Example:
http://www.redhat.com/archives/blinux-list/2005-December/msg00050.html
I understand when money is tight. I hate spending a lot on electronics that outdates
so fast, which is why I like to build all of my own machines (one of many reasons)..
:-)

Thanks,
I have now learned ( from you) gobs about FAT etc.
My solution to tight money, so far, has been to run linux, because the software is
free, and it doesn't stop working because you get a newer version of linux.
But, for some tasks ( like some video files) windows
is the way to go--even wine doesn't work.
Thanks for the warnings about NTFS and FAT and speed--I will stick with win 98.
best
Penny
