Mouse /Keyboard Freezes if left on overnight

If I leave my laptop on overnight when I come to use it in the morning the keyboard and mouse have frozen. When I run my finger over the mouse pad the laptop reboots. Generally no error messages are generated and the laptop is fine once rebooted.

Sounds like you used the wrong word:
http://www.google.com/images?q=mouse-pad

Perhaps you meant touchpad.

Thanks for your response Geng. I can see how misuse of the word mousepad could cause
confusion - but having said that maybe I've invented something - USB2 connected!!!!

My system info is ...
Windows 98 4.10.2222 A Clean install using Full OEM IE 5 6.0.2800.1106
GenuineIntel Intel(r) Celeron(tm) Processor
128MB RAM
55% system resources free
Windows-managed swap file on drive C (4216MB free)
Available space on drive C: 4216MB of 9419MB FAT32

How much useless junk are you running?

The following were found at startup which when I enquired on google I came up with
the following...
zztp - keystroke logger - I have unchecked it but is still there once I do all below!!
scanregw - looks genuine as its takes a backup daily - no action taken.
NWEReboot - Nero file but possibly not required no -action taken.
AR2507MON - ***unknown-not found on google - pls advise***
TkBellExe - Realplayer file which I have unchecked but now appears twice, once checked
and once unchecked!!! Suggested action is to rename to .OLD and also rename EVNTSVC
to .OLD - pls advise.
PL2515.exe - ***not clear on google what I should do - no action taken***
QTTASK.EXE - Movie Player - now unchecked.
mstask.exe - no action taken but probably ok.
KB891711 - a Microsoft fix which may or may not be a problem - no action taken.

I have downloaded and run Adaware (got rid of 404 instances), Spybot (16), latest
AVG (0) and ZoneAlarm (0) - I already had AVG and Zonealarm running. I have also
turned off email scanner in AVG as it is also running in ZoneAlarm - is that a good
decision????

I also took the actions to increase my security and privacy settings but they made
IE unusuable so I have reset them to Medium as I have adequate security as above.

So having done all the above the problem still occurs. Could it relate to AVG which
I have got running on an automatic schedule as follows...

Test Plan in basic mode 5.00am
Update Plan in basic mode 03:43am

You gave me a fair bit of work to do which has clearly helped already. Thanks for
the help for far and appreciate any further help.

You're welcome--and that's "gewg_" (like "goog").

|55% system resources free
|
That's something you want to improve (by paring down the Startup List).

||How much useless junk are you running?
|| gewg_
|
|mstask.exe - no action taken but probably ok.
|
M$'s automated-task manager.
Many programs that need periodic updates
have their own built-in schedulers these days.
The only thing that uses this any more IME is Windoze.

|zztp - keystroke logger - I have unchecked it but is still there
|
Its presence is evidence that you are a VERY unsophisticated Windoze user.

|I have downloaded and run Adaware (got rid of 404 instances),
|Spybot (16),
|
More supporting evidence Re: my hypothesis.

|latest AVG (0) and ZoneAlarm (0)
|I have also turned off email scanner in AVG as it is also running in ZoneAlarm
| - is that a good decision?
|
NO. Different functions. You are unclear on what ZoneAlarm does:
http://www.google.com/search?q=What-is-a-firewall

Until you become MUCH more aware of what constitutes good online security
(and even then), you need all the help (crutches) you can get:
http://www.google.com/search?q=SiteAdvisor-Plug-in
(This DOES NOT work with that PoS which I disparagingly call Internet Exploder;
yet another reason to dump IE--see below.)

|I also took the actions to increase my security and privacy settings
|but they made IE unusable
|
Somehow you have missed the admonition for all Windoze users
to USE A MORE SECURE BROWSER.
http://www.annoyances.org/exec/forum/win98/1142663471

BTW, even many ostensibly "sophisticated" Windoze users
have trouble getting M$IE to a reasonable level of security
(which even then STILL falls short of the levels of security
offered by the free alternatives available).

|So[,] having done all the above[,] the problem still occurs.
|Could it relate to AVG...?
|
*I* would suspect the (malware) keystroke logger.
Not only is this the classic definition of spyware,
it would seem to be POORLY WRITTEN spyware
--making you aware of its presence by malfunctioning.
(The Sony / Bertelsmann Music Group rootkit on their music CDs is such an infection:
it is so poorly written, it makes your system run noticeably slower.)

|PL2515.exe - not clear on google what I should do
|AR2507MON - ***unknown-not found on google - pls advise***
|
|
I'm not a malware expert--far from it.
(I'm not one of those "close the barn door after all the livestock is gone" types.)

One last nugget: You need someone who is good at solving infection problems.
Carol J is savvy about such things, but her presence here has been sparse lately
(and such things are better handled in specialized fora IMO).
There is a list of malware forums at the bottom of this USENET post:
http://groups.google.com/group/alt.privacy.spyware/browse_frm/thread/428ecef8647500d
?q=cexx+TomCoyote+SpywareWarrior+aumha+geekstogo

After you have gotten an idea of what is available,
choose one and follow the forum rules there
to get help getting rid of your infections.

You're wrong on two counts, gewg_. First off, 55% free resources isn't too low, unless that's directly after bootup. Second, off :)... There's a Site Advisor plug-in for IE also.

I didn't read your entire post... I'm not all that savvy when it comes to theses newer infections. So, I don' deal with major malware issues much anymore, other than to try to point victims in the right direction.

 Carol J

Ack. I'll bet, however, that his numbers could be even better.

Second, off :)... There's a Site Advisor plug-in for IE also.

D'oh. I knew that. (Showing my deep bias there.) 8-)
I was thinking of the Mozilla suite, which isn't yet explicitly supported.
(Firefox is explicitly supported.)

I'm not all that savvy when it comes to [these] newer infections.
So, I [don't] deal with major malware issues much anymore,
other than to try to point victims in the right direction.

I acknowledge that I'm a piker when it comes to infections
--and even I know that it is getting to be a major chore
to try to stay current on all the nasties.

Note to Chas:
If you're lazy (like I am), you'll find that in the future,
the easiest route is to AVOID infections.
A little bit of homework pays BIG dividends.

There's really no need for him to get his free resources lower than that. That's,
unless he's not running the programs he normally uses. That was always about the
average on my old system, 45-50% free.

He still has plenty available to run even more apps, as long as they're not resource
hogs. Yeah, he could probably get it down more by not using his system. If his system's
infected, there may be extra resources being used than there normally is.

About the bias, I completely understand that.... but, it's not lazy to want to avoid
infections, since many are next to impossible to clear up!
