switching between ethernet cable and wireless card

Have Win98SE notebook (Thinkpad X21). Have internet access via ethernet cable at work, but at times want to use a local wireless network. Have Linksys WPC55AG notebook adpator card. When I power down, remove ethernet cable, insert card, power up, the card is active, detects network, etc. However my browser(s) seem to be unable to find the net. Seems like they are looking for the ethernet cable and are unaware of the card. Sometimes this is not the case and everything works fine. Any ideas about what I can do to point the browser(s) to the net through the card? Thanks -
