ADAPTEC DirectCD

I have Adaptec directCD on my Win 98 computer with CD-Writter Plus. It isn't working,
I get this message when I try to play a CD," M:\ is not accessible. The device is
not ready" which it never gets ready. I know very little about the computer or this
program, thought some one might give me some clues as what to do to make it work.
It also won't write a CD, just won't work. Thanks in advance.

Hello Linda,
"Adaptec DirectCD" is one of the "UDF" format writer/reader applications. (Meaning
"drop and drag".) That method of writing/reading to disks is not very reliable.
Consider_ burning CDs using the what I believe is called the "ISO" format - burn
by way of the usual m_ethod, rather than drop and drag.
The most reliable alternative method (to drop and drag UDF) is to specify a CD-RW
as a multi-sesssion CD and copy with it only one folder, in which you have placed
the file you want to copy. Whenever you want to make a change, always make the change
(or copy the file) to that same folder and then do a new session to the CD - the
CD-RW is then updated from that folder.
If you don't have that sort of burning software, you could purchase the following_
"Nero 6.6" for £7.92, from:
http://www.ebuyer.com/customer/products/index.html?rb=23424481844&action=c2hvd19wcm9kdWN0X292ZXJ2aWV3&product_uid=92894
I would mention that in the list of its functions you will see "InCD4" mentioned,
which is the equivalent of "Adaptec's DirectCD" and as mentioned above I would
NOT recommend that method of burning.
Instead use the main application: "Nero Burning ROM", or "Nero Express" which contains
wizards .
Note that Nero may not function unless you uninstall all Adaptec CD burning software!
I hope that helps.
Regards.

"It isn't working, I get this message when I try to play a CD, ' M:\ is not accessible.
The device is not ready' which it never gets ready."
That sounds like a hardware problem. I had a CDRW like that. I got it at a big
discount at an office supply store. Functioning was always hit or miss. I finally
solved the problem when I bought a game that needed DVD and CDROM capabilities and
I got a middling priced DVD CDRW. Now I don't have a problem.
In both cases the software was Nero Burning. I couldn't get the cheapie to write
anyway. It was supposed to be a 52x-24x item. I succeeded when I went thru the
Nero menus and found a place to slow down the writing to 8x.
I must say, the new version of Nero Burning is much easier to use.
Another point. There is a strange cultural tradition that the CD drive be mounted
highest in the case. At that location hot air cannot rise from it and you may find
the discs hot when you take them out. The answer for that is to defy tradition and
put the floppy drive at the top. It doesn't generate much heat and it is small and
heat from the CD drive will flow up around it.
One software detail about Nero. They do something they shouldn't do. They put 3
copies of MSVCRT.DLL in the Program Files. There should only be one copy of that
on the computer and it should be the latest. That is available from Microsoft and
is in a program named SPEU.EXE which has the latest version and updates of several
other files. For unknown reasons, the normal Windows Update does not do this. The
latest version is 285 KB and is dated May 5, 2001.

Your description is very sketchy.
It could be that the thing worked at one time
and it has increasingly given problems--eventually not working at all.
In that case, get a lens cleaner and use it.
If the drive is very old, the laser LED could be degraded past reliability
and you need to replace the drive.
It could be that the thing worked at one time and suddenly didn't.
In that case, it could be a corrupt device driver,
meaning that the old driver should be removed and a replacement installed.
It could be that the drive is brand new and you have never seen it work.
In that case, it needs to be connected with a power cable and a signal cable,
jumpered properly, and needs a device driver installed.

Hi Linda.
How come the drive letter is M:? How many drives or partitions do you have?
I use Cequadrat PacketCD which is a drag & drop method of writing CD's, but it isn't
reliable.
As mentioned InCD4 comes with Nero but it won't let you install if you have PacketCD
or another drag/drop software installed. I didn't know Adaptec's DirectCD was the
same type of software.
