red x's

Thank you in advance for any suggestions and help.
I have searched the data and information on anonymous.org but could not find anything
relating to my problem. I have Win98SE and IE6. Often times when I try receive an
email that is supposed to have photos or pictures with it, I only get a blank square
with a red x in it. The other day, I received mail from a clothing catalog company
and all of the pictures were just small, empty squares with red x's in them. Any
ideas? I do not have a firewall.
Thank you again. I looked but could not find anything about this situation here.
Maybe I did not use the right words in the search engine but I tried a lot of different
ways to search.
Tony

This doesn't seem to be a Win98 problem.
Have you checked the Email Account
Settings? Some Email Programs will block various content. Open the email,
then look at the top of the Email Message. Is there an option to display or not to
display Content
.

It sounds like it could be conneted to a web page. If you select File/Save As in
IE and give it a name. Goto that filename in Explorer and you will see a sub folder
of the same name. This folder stores all the pictures this web pages uses. If you
delete all these pictures and open the page you've saved you will see boxes with
the red X in saying the name of the picture.

Thank you for the information. There is usually a "show html..." message at the bottom
and I do check it to show but it still has red x's.

Thank you for that. I took a look at the site and I will try that to see if it works.
Sounds good to me.

Have pictures sent to you as attachments instead of in the message. It worked for me.

Hello; Thank you for the input. I appreciate it. The ones that I received were from a company and they usually just send out their sale catalog not as an attachment. There was supposed to be a lot of photos of stuff but there were only little squares with red x's in the corner. This has happened before. I clicked on the message below their email that says "show html graphics" but it did not work. Tony

Reading email in HTML mode is a BAD idea.
cache
of http://www.birdhouse.org/etc/evilmail.html
+spamminess++security-issues

Aside from the fact that this opens you to more spam
(and other nefarious behaviour), http://www.eff.org/Privacy/Marketing/web_bug.html
it has already been noted that you do things
which increase the probability that you will get
(indeed, have gotten) your box infected.
HTML email is yet another way that happens.

I'll bet you are also using the LEAST SECURE email client ever made
--what I call "Outbreaks in Excess"--and using it in a non-secured manner.
There are MANY email programs which are better:
cache
of http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Comparison_of_e-mail_clients
+Free+thunderbird+opera+eudora+pegasus
Any of those can import all your old stuff.

The SMART way to handle images (security-wise, bandwidth-wise, and otherwise)
is for the person who wants to share them
to park them on a server somewhere (there are TONS of photo-sharing sites)
and include in the message a short description and a LINK to the image.
(I find the vast majority of Internet-related images to be worthless indulgences
which waste my bandwidth, hard drive space, and time.)

Those people are idiots.
Sending them money says that you support ignorant usage of the Internet.
Drop them a note and suggest they fire their Web guy
and hire someone who has half a clue.

Properly done, catalogs are put on Web pages and are NOT a "push" technology.

Thank you for your advice. I appreciate it. I am going to review the site you suggested and go to something more secure. I was under the impression that Spyware Blaster would take care of some of this but I am a novice, so what do I know. Thank you again. Let me try this and see what happens.

The catalog in question was one I had requested one page from (dealing with a 5 yr old's winter clothing) and the other was a tool catalog from which I had requested more information on a planer. Maybe they sent the information the wrong way. Thank you, Tony

I have not nor do I intend to send the company money. Not for the purchase of any of their products. I was interested only in a comparison standpoint. Comparing their product and the various qualities to what is to be had from our local retailers. I have not ever ordered anything from the Internet and do not intend to. I think that would be unwise from a lot of different standpoints. I would rather deal with a local retailer even though it may cost a little more. Like most persons, I would find it impossible to knowingly support any business at all that knowingly undermines the safety of the Internet in any way. Thank you for your advice. I appreciate your advice and assistance. Tony
